Princess of Tap
Who is this popular character actor? He was seen not long ago on TCM as Victor Mature's father in a movie that starred Betty Grable. It's George Barbier-- I just saw him in a scene with Clark Gable in Wife vs Secretary. So I saw this movie on VHS years ago I swear I don't remember ever seeing this man. Well, that was a hard one! MilesArcher
Yes, Princess, It's George Barbier. He usually played wealthy businessmen or the father of the star. He played both in "Song Of The Islands" with Victor Mature. He was in lots of movies in the thirties and early forties. I'm sure you've seen him many times, Princess. He was in "Yankee Doodle Dandy". He played the doctor in "The Man Who Came To Dinner". He even played Bing Crosby's boss in "Waikiki Wedding". Now, here is an actor who was seen very recently on TCM. He was born outside the U.S. and was somewhat typecast for most of his movie career. Do you know him? He often had a mustache.

I guess with George Barbier I was just out of luck-- It's been decades since I've seen Yankee Doodle Dandy. I don't like Bing Crosby movies and Victor Manure has never turned me on. But it was a great question - - and I only got it by chance! BTW-- did you see Wife vs. Secretary yesterday?
MilesArcher
Sorry, Princess. I didn't see "Wife vs Secretary". However, I did see some of "Libeled Lady" and "Red Dust". I take it that you can't see my photos. I'll try another source. Can you see them now?

MilesArcher
Yes, he was just on TCM this week, playing the father of Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban in "Fiesta". He was actually a trained opera singer. Nice going, Rich. You're up next.

scsu1975
This one will be tough since she is not recognizable from this still. She worked steadily in silents and through the sound era, with her last screen appearance in the 1960s.
scsu1975
Next clue: She was probably better known for something besides acting.

scsu1975
In the spirit of the Olympic Games, here is a publicity photo from a 1930s film in which the leads play Olympians. The man may be recognizable, but the woman is surely not.
