LawrenceA
That's all of the Born on the Fourth of July people (and Trigger!). Princess answered the most, but she can't post pics, so the thread's open to anyone who can.

MilesArcher
That's right, Princess. Happy Birthday to George M.! Now, as a follow-up to that photo, here is a photo where you see two famous New Yorkers. And this young fellow who had a connection to both of them. Who are the men, who is the boy, and what is his connection to the two men?

Lou Gehrig and George M Cohan and the connection is Douglas Croft played them both as boys, Gehrig in Pride of The Yankees and he played Cohan in Yankee Doodle Dandy
MilesArcher
Well, that didn't take very long, and, of course, you are correct, Lavender. Sunday night, the MLB network showed "Pride Of The Yankees". It was practically unwatchable with commercial breaks every few minutes, but I did see enough to recognize young Douglas Croft. The movie was made in 1942, the year after Gehrig died. In that same year, Douglas Croft played young George M. Cohan in "Yankee Doodle Dandy". Mr, Cohan died later that year, but he did get a chance to see a special screening of the movie. That film will be shown on TCM on July 4th. Also in 1942, Croft played Drake McHugh (Ronald Reagan's role) as a young boy in "King's Row". Croft's best known role was as Robin, The Boy Wonder, in Columbia's 1943 serial, "Batman". By age twenty-one, Douglas Croft was out of acting completely. Now here is something that's a bit strange. Douglas Croft had played Lou Gehrig on the screen. Gehrig died at the young age of thirty-seven. Douglas Croft also died at age thirty-seven. I'll be back a little later with another post. scsu1975
Croft's best known role was as Robin, The Boy Wonder, in Columbia's 1943 serial, "Batman". The 15-part serial was re-released in 1965, just prior to the TV series hitting the air. Critics were not kind to Croft. One wrote "his hair resembles an SOS pad after a GI barracks party." Another described him as a "fuzzy-haired adolescent who resembles Freddie Bartholomew in BVDs and Halloween mask." Ouch.
MilesArcher
Here is that fuzzy haired teenager, Douglas Croft. Now, do you know this fellow? He was a young stage actor when these photos were taken. He didn't make his mark in movies until he was much older, in the 1930's and 1940's. Can you guess who it is?
scsu1975
That gentleman is Harry Davenport, from the famous Davenport family. Both his parents were actors, and his sister Fanny and brother Edgar were also actors, mainly on stage. Edgar made a few silent films, but they are presumed lost. However, if you want to hear Edgar's voice, recordings do exist of him reciting poetry. You can find them on youtube.
MilesArcher
Yes, Rich. It is indeed Harry Davenport. He was well into his seventies before he landed the roles of Dr. Meade in "Gone With The Wind" and Grandpa in "Meet Me In St. Louis". He appeared in over a hundred movies. Nice work, Rich. You get to post next.
scsu1975
This will be a tough one. Who is this actor, who is made up for a part?
LawrenceA
Noah Beery Sr.?
scsu1975
Noah Beery Sr.? No, but that is a good guess. Unlike Beery, this actor was not born in the United States.
scsu1975
Thus far, we know the actor is not Noah Beery, Sr., and was not born in the United States. The photo is from the actor's final film.
Princess of Tap
This will be a tough one. Who is this actor, who is made up for a part? I'm a big fan of Ty Power; that's how I know about this movie which was the last thing his dad ever did-- The Big Trail with John Wayne. And this is a lot of makeup because, just like his son, Tyrone Power Senior was a very handsome man. The Power family was British and Irish and Ty's father was born in London. scsu1975
Nicely done, Princess. Here is a better shot of him, from The Big Trail. Can anyone identify the actor with him? Thread is open after that.
MilesArcher
The other actor is Ian Keith. You may remember him from a couple of Dick Tracy movies from the forties. He played eccentric, over the top stage actor Vitamin Flintheart. Now, do you know this diminutive actress? Her IMDB photo shows only her legs from this picture. A talented singer and dancer, she was typecast in westerns as a Mexican senorita. She never achieved the star status of other Mexican beauties like Lupe Velez or Dolores Del Rio, but she did appear in pictures with Gene Autry, Harry Carey, and Duncan Renaldo. She also appeared in some non-westerns, one of which starred Walter Huston, and was mentioned in one of my posts in another thread recently. Do you know who she is? MilesArcher
Sorry, Shutoo. This gal sometimes called herself Mimi. She and her sister can be seen in the Sister Act number from 1929's "The Show Of Shows", which has been shown a couple of times on TCM.
MilesArcher
Well, it'e been a while and no one has gotten it, so I guess that this 4'11" actress is just a bit too obscure. Her name is Armida Vendrell, but she was always billed as just "Armida". Here is a little clip of her in a movie called "Fiesta" from 1941. I'll be back later with a new photo. MilesArcher
All correct except number 2. It's not Eddie Quillan, although Eddie Quillan did appear with Lee Bowman in "Kid Glove Killer" on Friday on TCM. Number 2 sometimes had a mustache. He appeared with Lee Bowman in a service comedy.
