MilesArcher Posted July 29, 2017 Share Posted July 29, 2017 No. 1 is a photo of a very young Joan Carroll, who you remember from "Meet Me In St. Louis" and "The Bells Of St. Mary's". No. 2 is, I think, Martin Spellman. It's the curly hair that makes me think it's him. He was in "Boys Town" and he played the equally curly-haired Robert Preston's character as a boy in "Beau Geste". No. 3 is very familiar to me. It's Jan Clayton. She was married to Russell "Lucky" Hayden in the late thirties. He was one of Hoppy's saddle pals. She appeared in several of the Hoppy movies. A fine singer, she was the original Julie Jordan in "Carousel" on Broadway. In the fifties, she played Tommy Rettig's mother on the TV series "Lassie". This actress, because of her dark features, was usually cast as ethnic types, Mexicans, or Native Americans. Here is no. 6 in costume. I thought I would fool folks with the picture of Scotty Beckett with long hair, but I guess I couldn't fool Princess. There are still lots more to identify. So, between Princess and SCSU1975, we have nos 1,4,5,8,9,and 10, and yes, they all died before age forty. Knowing that, can you identify nos 2,3,6,and 7? No. 2 made only a few movies, including one with Shirley Temple. She was killed in a car accident at age nineteen. No. 3 had made a few films in the thirties, including some with a former child star. The two young men were riding in a car driven by the former child star's father when they had an accident on a rain slicked road in southern California. Only the former child star survived. This young actor was only nineteen years old. No. 6 had a famous relative who was a movie and TV star. This young actress had been married to an actor for only a year when she died of cancer at age twenty-one. No. 7 was a member of the "Our Gang" comedies at a very early age. He was one of the gang when Jackie Cooper, Farina, Mary Ann Jackson, and Miss Crabtree were featured. He often played Jackie Cooper's younger brother. Another cast member in her last film was Lew Cody, who died on May 31st of that year. This young lady was killed in a car accident eight days later. Their last movie was released in July, 1934. No. 3 made only ten movies. He was in a movie with Pat O'Brien and Bette Davis. He played a boy who took the rap for a crime that Pat O'Brien committed. Dorothy Dell was a lovely young actress who had won beauty contests in her home state of Louisiana. She was in "Little Miss Marker" with Shirley Temple and then she made a movie called "Shoot The Works". One of the cast members in that movie was veteran actor Lew Cody, who died of a heart attack on May 31st, 1934. Eight days later, after attending a party, the car carrying Dorothy Dell and her date hit a tree and both occupants were killed. The movie was released in July of that year. Junior Durkin had played Huckleberry Finn in 1930's "Tom Sawyer" and 1931's "Huckleberry Finn". Both movies had starred Jackie Coogan as Tom Sawyer. Junior Durkin was in "Hell House" in 1932 with Pat O'Brien and Bette Davis. In May of 1935, on their way back from a hunting trip, Jackie Coogan's father was driving with two men, as well as Jackie and Junior Durkin. They swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and went off the road and tumbled down into a ravine. Young Jackie Coogan was the only survivor.
