Guest
Finally got to see this Constance Bennett comedy on TCM... Osborne mentioned the similarities between this film and the great My Man Godfrey, but it almost seemed they purposely copied it... evn to the point of pouring cold water on Bennett and having her jump and yell about love (Lombard was in a shower).... Anyone else notice "similarities"? Ed
twangman9312
Yes, I noticed the same thing, though I only saw the last half hour or so. It was a damn good film anyway. No one can beat William Powell, but I liked Merrily almost as much as My Man Godfrey. Which studio made it? If it was the same stduio, maybe it was a deliberate remake with a few changes. If a different studio tried it they might have botten sued.
Guest
good point... not sure which studios... I think My Man Godrey was RKO but I'm not sure. There were lots of zany rich folks movies during the screwball period, but Merrily We Live even copied the "forgotten man" theme. But it was fun in any case and Constance Bennett, Brian Aherne, Billie Burke, Clarence Kolb, Alan Mowbray, and even Bonita Granville were all very funny.... even the huge dogs were good!
