Recently I watched a film with Shirley Knight and couldn't believe how much she reminded me of Shelley Winters. So much so that the two actresses could play sisters.

In your opinion what other stars (past or present) could pass as siblings, mothers/daughters, fathers/sons etc.?

How about "brothers" John Hodiak and Richard Egan?

Whenever I see a picture of Mt. Rushmore and one of those stone faces I'm always convinced I'm viewing a close-up of Mr. Stone Face himself--Robert Mitchum. As he grew into old age, it was like his face had metamorphed into the Killer Devil Doll--you know, the one that chased Karen Black around in the fright classic, "Triology of Terror." But then Meryl Streep has always possessed a strong resemblance to that great character actress, Edna Mae Oliver.

Naw...you're not crazy, and I prefer Warren William, if I get to pick my favorite of the two.

Is this going too far out on a limb...Mary Boland and Ruth Donnelly? I know the voices aren't remotely alike, but when I see one or the other, I always have to pause and think which movie I've seen her in before.

I know this will sound mean, but I've heard people joke that Joan Crawford and Victor Mature were the same person. I had to laugh when I heard that, but when you think about it, it seems they could have been brother and sister. And Ava Gardner and Angelina Jolie look like they could be mother and daughter. Even though they come from different eras, they have a strong resemblance. And speaking of Mary Boland, she always reminds me of Alice Brady - it seems those two could have been sisters.

Funny, I've often noticed a brotherly resemblance between Victor Mature and Robert Mitchum, particularly since they were playing the same kind of noir film roles back in the 40s and early 50s.

And then there's Gwili Andre, who I saw in some of David O. Selznick's films on TCM back in October. She looked so much like Joan Crawford, it was spooky!

There's also a sisterly resemblance between Ruth Donnelly and Jean Dixon as well, again because they were frequently playing the friend of the hero/heroine in the screwball comedies of the 30s.

Lastly, going back to the silent days, there's Neil Hamilton and Ralph Graves, who looked enough like brothers to invite serious comment on the subject.

Funny, I've always noticed a brotherly resemblance between Victor Mature and Robert Mitchum, particularly since they were both playing a lot of the same noir roles in the 40s and early 50s.

The little-known Gwili Andre, who I saw in a few of David O. Selznick's films on TCM back in October, looked so much like Joan Crawford it was spooky!

Again, because both of them often played the best friend of the hero/ine in the screwball comedies of the 30s, I've also noticed a sisterly resemblance between Ruth Donnelly and Jean Dixon.

Lastly, going back to the silent days (I'm really reaching here, aren't I?), Neil Hamilton and Ralph Graves looked enough like brothers to cause serious comment in the press.

lolmsted - You're absolutely right about Ava Gardner and Liv Tyler looking like mother/daughter. I actually thought of Liv Tyler after I posted. She and Ava both have the same beautiful eyes. And speaking of Jean Dixon, she's one of my favorite character actresses. Her best role was in "Holiday" - I thought she was terrific in that. And who could forget her getting all mushy over William Powell in "My Man Godfrey."

Here's another match - Frances Langford and Kathryn Grayson - they could definitely be sisters - or either one of them and Wini Shaw - they were all cute, brunette singer/actresses, who had similar features.

Good observations Moviejoe. Very funny Pattypancake.

Here are some for thought:

"Sister/brother" Aline MacMahon & Horace McManhon

"Mother/daughter" Marie Windsor & Illeana Douglas

"Sisters" Debbie Reynolds & Connie Marshall

"Sisters" Mayo Methot & Jeanne Cagney

These resemblances may be so obvious that no one thought of mentioning them but...As a child, I used to think some of these actors were the same person...but, hey, maybe I was just a wee bit slow...(-:

Burt Lancaster & Kirk Douglas (brothers)

Franklyn Pangborn & Reginald Gardiner (brothers)

John Emery & John Barrymore (brothers-Tallulah Bankhead even commented on the resemblance between her former husband and the Great Profile)

Douglas Fairbanks Jr. & John Barrymore (son and father)

Hoot Gibson & Walter Brennan (brothers, again)

and from the present--way too obvious, especially in "A River Runs Through It":

Robert Redford & Brad Pitt (father and son, of course)

Now we're cooking with gas Patty and Moira. Those comparisons are first rate!

One correction please and that is the actress Patty Pancake listed as Sara Albright should be Sara Allgood who played to perfection the mother in "How Green Was My Valley".

lolmsted - Bert Lahr and Joe E. Brown - that's a GREAT one!!! - They even have the same types of personalities - can you imagine them with Jimmy Durante as their father - and perhaps Zazu Pitts as their mother - that would be one crazy household!!! That would've been a great comedy series, ala "Ma and Pa Kettle."

You all listed some great choices!

Here are a few more:

"Brothers" Mark Stevens and Lew Ayres

"Sisters" Ida Lupino and Andrea King

"Brothers" Zachary Scott and James Griffith (if you recall actor Griffith I'm sure you will agree with me)

A few more pairs of "relatives" occurred to me:

Laird Cregar & Raymond Massey

(brothers: large fellows, sensitive, erudite, and a wee bit menacing!)

Zazu Pitts & Estelle Winwood

(sisters: just a little otherworldly)

Florence Bates & Josephine Hull

(sisters: Bates is the evil sis, Josephine is the incompetent sibling)

Cecil Kellaway & Gene Lockhart

(genial, ineffectual, and wiser than their surface appearance suggests)

Marsha Hunt & Kathryn Grayson

(sisters: it's the little upturned nose and kittenish air)
