Don Mankiewicz (1922-2015)

Recommended Posts

Don Mankiewicz, who co-wrote the screenplay for Susan Hayward's 1958 Oscar-winning performance in "I Want to Live!," has died at the age of 93. He was the uncle of Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz. His death occurred six months after the passing of his brother Frank -- Ben's father -- who served as the press secretary for U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy's ill-fated 1968 presidential campaign.

"I Want to Live!" was based on the true story of Barbara Graham, who was executed for murder by the State of California in a gas chamber on June 3, 1955. Directed by Robert Wise, the film also earned Mankiewicz and co-writer Nelson Gidding an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
