TopBilled
Ooh, I'm glad to see Mae Clarke on here! So am I....she's wonderful. Usually, she gets remembered for two films she made with Cagney, but she had a very substantial film career. Glad to see TCM recognizing her. Glad to see TCM recognizing her. In my circles, people always write her off as wooden due to only seeing her in Frankenstein, but that's unfair. After seeing her in Waterloo Bridge, my opinion of her 180-ed. She really was terrific.
YabbaDabba
No. Mastroianni. Again. I guess Dietrich and Bergman are their token foreigners (not counting the Brits)? Just watch, they will forget him on his birthday again in September.... Do we really NEED any more Gary Cooper days, ya know? Or Katharine Hepburn???? Of course I like those actors. But what is the point if you can't be inclusive? Is there a list somewhere of all the SUTS stars from all the years it's been done? Yes, there are a few neat additions....Mae Clarke, Raymond Massey, Adolphe Menjou (who was born in Pittsburgh and is Not French). But still... I am hating this channel any more. TopBilled
Last time I checked Garbo was from Sweden. Of course you're right. Garbo can be marketed a few different ways on TCM. But I don't think we consider her that much of a representative of Swedish classic cinema. She became pretty Hollywood. At least Bergman made plenty of European films after her Hollywood productions (in various countries and languages). To me Bergman is the most international classic film star. Kay
Is there a list somewhere of all the SUTS stars from all the years it's been done? Yeah, there's a SOTM/SUTS history thread in the stickies section. Using the find function on your keyboard (Ctrl and F) makes it easy to search for particular names. Here's a link: http://forums.tcm.com/index.php?/topic/48413-star-of-the-month-summer-under-the-stars-honorees/ TCM started this SUTS thing in 2003, and first honored a foreign language film star in 2011, with Jean Gabin. Then it was Toshiro Mifune (the lone non-French person), Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau this past year. This year they broke their streak (unless you count Bergman, which I do not.) Hopefully they'll pick it up again, because it certainly is a drag not having Silent Sunday/Imports to look forward to every week.

twillustration
Just in case anyone is interested I will be tweeting a portrait (drawn daily) of each individual featured star during TCM's Summer Under the Stars. TCM has been kind enough to retweet all of the work I have done for them the past couple of years. Just look for TCM's retweets or follow me @timwilliamsart. Here are just a few:
