HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

I'm recording Isle of Fury tomorrow. Bogart film I haven't seen.

For some reason that is not on in Canada.  We get The Girl From Mexico.  It's a bit odd as I taped Isle of Fury on TCM a few years ago.

Thurs. March 31st/Fri. April 1st : All times E.S.T.: A musical ahead of its' time, and "Condemned" movies:

3:45 p.m. "Athena" (1954)--Songs are pretty, and occasionally witty.  Everyone can sing, or is dubbed; script would have to be poisonous to ruin film.  Several songs and promo short are on YT.

1:45 a.m. "Strange Cargo" (1940)--I want to hear Sister Rose and her take on the film.

3:45 a.m. "Rififi" (1954)--Jules Dassin directed "caper" film I haven't seen.

                             A "Maybe":

8:00 p.m.--"The Moon Is Blue" (1953)--The version that was on television in the 1970's (when I saw it) was almost antiseptic, except for using the word "virgin" and discussing whether one should remain one or not.

Misses: MGM Parade Show #19 (1955)

I usually welcome the shorts - even repeats - however, MGM Parade Show #19 seems to have been paraded about a half a dozen times in the last couple of months!

Is that the one where Susan Hayward shows up to plug I'LL CRY TOMORROW?

If so, then yeah I am totally with you that one gets shown all the time. From recollection I think I've come across it 5 times in the last year.

It starts with an Astaire/Kelly dance number - can't remember if that specific plug is present, as I now tend to tune out whenever it reappears - however, it's airing again tomorrow morning, so we can all check to see...

Seriously, I just checked the monthly schedule - it's on/been on 9 times in March alone. It was pleasant enough the first time, but I'm seeing the darn thing in my nightmares now...

[edit: I think the Hayward one is #13 & yes, I remember that popping up quite a few times - does TCM repeatedly air one episode per month perhaps? Other episodes do appear, there was one with a very young Roger Moore a while back, but I only caught that once.]

Pigskin Parade (1936) has a rare TCM showing tomorrow. This is an entertaining musical that gets an extra recommendation for Elisha Cook, Jr. fans.

As for later tonight, I'll be making a point to watch L'amore (1948) with Anna Magnani.

And I'll second SansFin's recommendation of Rififi (1954) which I finally got to see recently after having wanted to for a long time. It's a fascinating, expertly made noir focusing on the anticipation and aftermath of a heist. The heist scene is done in a long, elaborate silent sequence that supposedly has been copied by multitudes of real cat burglars ever since.

Friday, April 1

9:15 a.m.  Hollywood Party (1934).  Laurel & Hardy!

8 p.m.  Pigskin Parade (1936).  Leading man Stuart Erwin was nominated for a supporting Oscar for this one.  Unavailable on dvd in North America I think?  I bought a Spanish dvd copy and here it is on for free.

Tomorrow I'll be taping Our Relations. because I was told it was good; Valley of the Kings, because I like ancient cultures and I've been told to give Robert Taylor another shot; and Shaft In Africa, because despite my extensive knowledge of blaxploitation films, I've never seen either Shaft sequel.

Have you seen the remake of Shaft, Lawrence?  I have not.

I have, and I have it on DVD. It's entertaining, and Christian Bale has fun playing a racist 1 percenter. But Jeffrey Wright steals the movie as a Dominican drug lord.

Is the Irene Ryan in THE SULTAN'S DAUGHTER ---- airing today (April 1) on TCM ---- the same Irene Ryan who was Granny on THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES?

She was billed as Tim and Irene.

The film was so bad - like they actively sought to bring it to the lowest possible level.

If Ann Curio was a famous burlesque dancer, you wouldn't have known it from this film.

Ann Curio was still doing her act into the 1960's and later as I recall.

But she was no Blaze Starr!

Sunday, April 3

noon.  Sense and Sensibility (1995).  Is there no genre Ang Lee cannot tackle?

10 p.m.  Kitty (1945).  Both Paulette Goddard and Constance Collier are rather good in this.

4:45 a.m.  Alice In the Cities (1974).  “Under the boardwalk…”  I loved this German new-wave, Wim Wenders film when it premiered at the very first Toronto Film Festival.

Monday, April 4

Anthony Perkins by day and John Barrymore by night.  Well done.

6:15 p.m.  The Trial (1963).  Like a lot of Welles’ films my appreciation of this one increases the more I see it.

10 p.m.  A Bill of Divorcement (1932).  I think this one is hard to come by.  It used to be replaced in Canada on a regular basis and when the schedule was originally announced it was replaced with The Mad Genius (1931).  It seems to be back on in Canada now, fingers crossed.

2:30 a.m.  Bulldog Drummond Comes Back (1937)

3:45 a.m.  Bulldog Drummond’s Revenge (1937)

4:45 a.m.  Bulldog Drummond’s Peril (1938)  I haven’t seen the last two.
