Wednesday, June 15

4:30 p.m.  The Picture Snatcher (1933).  I still haven’t seen this James Cagney picture.

10 p.m.  The Importance of Being Earnest (1952).  I believe this Michael Redgrave film may be hard to come by.  I bought a Spanish dvd version of it some years ago.

2 a.m.  Private Lives (1931).  Norma Shearer does Noel Coward.  This has been bumped in Canada for …

2 a.m.  Men In White (1934)  A Clark Gable, Myna Loy picture.

I like this movie very much. I feel it is slightly different from his usual roles while maintaining his persona well. It is not: White Heat (1949) but what is?

This is one of the greatest movies of all time, in repartee excellence, Lawrence.

Or should I say Charlton. You keep changing identities faster than Tony Randall in that Dr. Lao film!

I simply cannot imagine it in Spanish though.

12:45 p.m.  When a Man Loves (1927) with John Barrymore.  Looks interesting.

Please don't miss it. It's been awhile and I can't wait. Dolores Costello is charming beyond words. Based on the 18th C novel by L'Abbe Prevost, from which the two Manon operas (Puccini and Massenet ) are derived. Obsessive love (or is that an oxymoron). Barrymore is great as usual.

The second Underground feature tomorrow: Absolute Beginners (1986), an overbearing rock 'n' roll musical worth watching for Ray Davies' number alone. I found the film pretty entertaining, otherwise, too. I watched this when it was part of Second Looks, with Illeana Douglas in May 2013, and haven't seen it air since. That was a great series, and I'm still hoping there will be a Part Two to it some day.

Ps- I've seen part of at least one of the Mexican Spitfire movies, and honestly it was really pretty damn funny. Lupe was not a bad actress and she's a gorgeous girl.

I saw most of Mexican Spitfire at Sea and the beginning of Mexican Spitfire Sees a Ghost and was laughing way too much. Sea has the added bonus of ZaSu Pitts and Florence Bates. Ghost has some excellent routines by Leon Errol. The telegram scene where he stops whenever someone reads the word "Stop" in the telegram was perfectly timed. The more I anticipated the joke, the funnier it got.

If I had been a kid when those movies were made, I would have wanted to see every one and would have been a big fan of Lupe Velez.

I HIGHLY recommend checking out her Wikipedia page.

Tomorrow daytime is Errol Flynn fest, and I'll be taping Rocky Mountain and Master of Ballantrae.

Tomorrow is the first day of my vacation. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. My birthday is on Wednesday. Vacation, pay day and Errol?! Happy birthday to me!!

Tomorrow night, Tuesday on TCM, they are showing Bob Rafaelson's film "Five Easy Pieces".

Now sure, it has a great performance from Nicholson and also fun with Karen Black, particularly her renditions of some nice Tammy Wynette tunes, but the real reason to watch is the interplay between the hitchhikers played by Toni Basil and Helena Kallianiotes.

Helena rants on and on about society and all its crap, and is hilarious. Actually there's no interplay between her and Basil who just sits there like a bump on a log, listening, as do Jack and Karen as the car speeds on to its destination.

Kallianotes is quite the showpiece of the film and I think steals its thunder. Oddly enough, I think she was married at one time to Billy Gray, Bud of "Father Knows Best" fame, which seems like an odd match, but maybe not as movies make strange bedfellows.

3:15 AM FIVE EASY PIECES (1970)

A classical pianist who's dropped out of society returns to the family he deserted.

DirBob Rafelson Cast:  Jack Nicholson , Karen Black , Lois Smith .

C-98 mins, CC,

I don't know. That Bud had a bit of an edge.

You can almost hear him shouting "Stellaaaaa!!!!!"

Hey, Billyboy looks darn cute in that t-shirt just like Brando would wear.

I think he is part Native American also like Bud Brando.

Two Buds are always a good idea, particularly after cutting the grass or at a ballgame.

Thanks, Holden!

Thanks for the heads up!  I can't believe that I've never seen the whole film -- only that clip in the diner.  I've always liked Karen Black, and I know and love Lois Smith, who lives a few blocks north of me in NYC.

(Btw, I wish TCM would show one of my favorite films, Mountains of the Moon, directed by Rafelson. I think it was shown once, but I missed it. Great, great film about Burton and Speke in Africa.)
