Classic aficionado
So what are your thoughts? Which 31 movie stars and/or film character actors and actresses would you choose for an August Summer Under the Stars? (You can select a particular star for each day of the month if you want to, but that is optional.) The following is only one of my three or four ideas for a SUTS in August: August 1st - Spencer Tracy August 2nd - Ann Sheridan August 3rd - John Ireland August 4th - Van Heflin August 5th - Leslie Howard August 6th - Carroll Baker August 7th - Greta Garbo August 8th - Sidney Poitier August 9th - Donna Reed August 10th - Laurence Harvey August 11th - Susan Hayward August 12th - Julie Christie August 13th - Edmund Gwenn August 14th - Fred Astaire August 15th - Nelson Eddy August 16th - Ida Lupino August 17th - Kim Novak August 18th - Ruth Hussey August 19th - Montgomery Clift August 20th - Janice Rule August 21st - James Garner August 22nd - Carol Lynley August 23rd - Jane Russell August 24th - Yvette Mimieux August 25th - John Garfield August 26th - Russ Tamblyn August 27th - Eleanor Parker August 28th - Martha Scott August 29th - Jane Wyman August 30th - Jerome Cowan August 31st - Joan Leslie I'm sure I'll back with some more ideas. How about your ideas?
misswonderly3
Hi, Classic aficionado; That's an interesting idea. "Summer Under the Stars" is always kind of a fun month. I see you've got some unusual suspects mixed in with some more well-known stars. That's always refreshing. To come up with 31 actors and actresses I'd program for August's SUTS will take me a while, I'm not very good at thinking of stuff like that off the top of my head. Thanks for a fun thread idea ! Bogie56
And thank you! I'm happy you like this thread idea and that you think this first idea is refreshing. I think I'll be posting a few more SUTS ideas in a few days. I really dig 'laundry' lists of everyone's favourite this and that. Thank you. Maybe our unseen programming Gods will look over some of the ideas with favour for their 2016 selection for the August 2015 schedule may be up pretty soon. HoldenIsHere
The following is only one of my three or four ideas for a SUTS in August: August 17th - Kim Novak If Kim Novak is honored this year maybe TCM will air THE LEGEND OF LYLAH CLARE again. speedracer5
I believe I made a similar list in another thread a few weeks ago, but these lists are always fun to make. Here's mine, which I'm sure is quite different than the one I made in the other thread: 1- Errol Flynn (I don't care that I've seen most of his movies. I love him. He deserves a day.) 2- Myrna Loy 3- Claude Rains 4- Angela Lansbury 5- Anne Baxter 6- George Sanders 7- William Holden 8- Jean Arthur 9- Gene Tierney 10- Fred MacMurray 11- Jean Harlow 12- Ann Sheridan 13- Ida Lupino 14- Charles Coburn 15- Olivia de Havilland 16- Rosalind Russell 17- James Cagney 18- Joel McCrea 19- Richard Widmark 20- Lucille Ball 21- SZ Sakall 22- Tony Curtis 23- Jack Carson 24- William Frawley 25- Dean Martin 26- Jack Lemmon 27- Eddie Albert 28- Joan Blondell 29- Hayley Mills 30- Agnes Moorehead 31- Eve Arden I had three other picks: Vera-Ellen, Mitzi Gaynor and Judy Holliday, but I don't know if these ladies made enough films to fill a full SUTS day.
Bogie56
August 20th - Janice Rule Janice Rule is quite an interesting choice. Not an obvious one as I see on the imdb that most of her work was in television. But it would be nice to learn more about her via TCM if possible. I keep touting Max von Sydow. 60 years of international work for top top directors.

Judy Holliday definitely does not.have enough to do a 24.hour tribute. Vera Ellen seems.to fall just short; maybe a showing of THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT 1 and 2 could fill the schedule. Mitzi Gaynor has just enough, I believe; the trick will be to get her 20th Century Fox titles.

joel6
I love Summer Under the Stars but I do wish they would program mostly the lesser known films for each star during their day rather then the old reliables, which I love but I'd much prefer to finally get to see say Housewife or Special Agent on a Bette Davis tribute day then the umpteenth showing of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? or All About Eve. That being said here are my 31 (I'm using that template of including the performers who have the most unseen films by me) Kay Kendall Gail Russell Ann Sheridan Alice Faye Anne Bancroft Deanna Durbin Veronica Lake Glynis Johns Alan Bates Edna May Oliver Lee J. Cobb Jane Wyman Joan Bennett Claire Trevor Linda Darnell Shelley Winters Ruth Roman Jane Greer Julie Christie Jack Carson Patricia Neal Arthur Kennedy Ida Lupino Fay Bainter Dorothy Malone Jean Simmons Dorothy McGuire Margaret Sullavan Marlene Dietrich Bette Davis Claudette Colbert

Arturo
Well, it looks like it's the TCM programmers who CAN'T select 31 actors and actresses for August Summer Under the Stars, judging by the apparent delay in announcing the schedule. Lol.

I hadn't known that Janice Rule had done so much television work. There is a great number of movies that she starred in and co-starred in. Two of them belong to the Time-Warner/Turner library: "Holiday For Sinners" (1952, MGM) and "Welcome To Hard Times" (1967, MGM). TCM also has easy access to two other of her titles: Goodbye My Fancy (1951, Warner Bros.) and Starlift (1951, Warner Bros.), and has occasionally aired the former. The other films of hers that I know TCM has shown are of course "The Swimmer", "The Chase", "Alvarez Kelly", "Invitation to a Gunfighter", "Fourteen Hours", and "Bell, Book, and Candle".
