Sad to say, but your poignant and thoughtful tribute to our military fallen is drowned out by the racket coming from the drunken crowd milling arount either the KEG, or the GRILL at many a backyard gathering.

Making Memorial Day a "Monday  holiday"  did a lot to obscure the significance of what the day was supposed to be about.  Good old American capitalism/commercialism wins everytime.

I'm not sure that is true.    By having the day on a long weekend the odds are higher that people will go to a event (e.g. a party), that honors the fallings.    I went to one on Sunday and we had a toast to the fallen.   If the holiday was in the middle of a working week to me it is possible that less people would know why they are getting a day off work.
