slaytonf
One of my very favorite actors, even if he was somewhat wooden in his delivery. He could nonetheless transmit a commanding leading man aura. It's no mystery he was a major leading man in the silent era, the thirties, all through his career, in fact. I suppose his most important film is Cimarron, as the irresponsible, roving Yancey Cravat. Another favorite of mine, occasionally seen, but which we will not tomorrow, is Hell's Highway, a brutal depiction of chain-gang life. In The Ghost Ship, one of his last movies, his stiffness acts to heighten the malevolence of Captain Stone's character.
HelenBaby2
I recommended the whole evening of films in the Hits & Misses thread. I don't particularly find him stiff but he is a restrained actor. When I look at him, or the characters he plays, a lot of things are going on behind those eyes.
