piperhaven
"the noir actor has a glacial prescence. He does not open up the frame, claiming screen space for himself, but plays close to the chest, remaining a figure in the noir landscape, one element in the noirs overall composition" Quoted from Foster Hirsch's The Dark Side of the Screen. I cannot express how deeply I disagree with this statement. Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield, Dick Powell, Edward G Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck, Kirk Douglas,Jean Simmons, Gene Tierney, Dana Andrews - you finish the list. I agree that this statement holds true for a small minority of noir, like Detour which has no significant star. But I suspect that for many of us a major part of the enjoyment of noir movies is watching these great stars go through their considerable paces. Please feel free to disagree..
