wouldbestar
I've never heard of this man before but everybody should. He was a class act human being and a credit to the entertainment industry everywhere. Actor Manfred Krug, a star in East and West Germany, dies aged 79 By Erik KirschbaumReuters BERLIN (Reuters) - German actor and singer Manfred Krug, one of the few performers to find fame on both sides of his divided country during the Cold War, has died in Berlin aged 79, his management company said. Communist authorities banned him from performing in East Germany in 1977 after he expressed support for a dissident folk singer and he asked to leave soon after. In West Germany, his career picked up again, as he released songs, published books and starred in television series. Krug became the public face for Deutsche Telekom's gigantic initial public offering in 1996 - only to burn his bridges with his corporate sponsors later by publicly apologizing to shareholders who lost money. "His greatest accomplishment was that he was first a star in East Germany and then became a star in all of Germany," said Berlin Mayor Michael Mueller. "Krug was never afraid to stand up for what he believed in." Krug was born in Duisburg, West Germany in 1937 and moved to Communist East Germany with his father, an engineer in the steel industry, in 1949. He started acting in 1957 and came up against the authorities less than a decade later, appearing in the East German film "Spur der Steine" (Trace of Stones) that was branded anti-Socialist soon after its release and banned. Another decade on, he signed a petition against the expulsion of folk singer Wolf Biermann, then headed west. He died on Oct. 21, but his family had wanted a private funeral before going public, his managers K&V Events said. "I'll remember Manfred Krug as one of the most authentic and popular actors of our age," the country's president Joachim Gauck, another East German, said on Thursday. "Whether on television, in films or on the stage, he showed us the strengths and weaknesses of human beings with his wonderful style." RIP, Sir, and thank you for showing us the best in humanity. Richard Kimble
John Zacherle What we have here is the end of an era. One of the few remaining famed original horror movie hosts, John Zacherle, known affectionately to fans as Zacherley, The Cool Ghoul, has passed on at the age of 98! That’s quite a run, and we’re all a lot creepier as a result of his illustrious career! John Zacherley was an American television host, radio personality, and voice actor known for his long career as a television horror host broadcasting horror movies in Philadelphia and New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. Best known for his character “Roland/Zacherley,” he also did voice work for movies and recorded the top ten novelty rock and roll song “Dinner with Drac” in 1958. He also edited two collections of horror stories, Zacherley’s Vulture Stew and Zacherley’s Midnight Snacks. To say that he was an icon is a bit of an understatement. This man, this wonderful man, was a force of nature who lived it up with fans well into his 90s. There will never be another like him, and we were lucky to have him haunting us for as long as we did. This Halloween season, don’t be sad. Celebrate him, his legacy, and all that he gave us which we are truly grateful for. The laughs, the chills, and the incredible memories. Hold your glass high, and toast him in the highest regard! https://www.dreadcentral.com/news/197076/rest-peace-john-zacherle-aka-zacherley-cool-ghoul/ NY Times profile from 2012: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/21/nyregion/john-zacherle-94-ex-television-horror-movie-host-can-still-play-the-ghoul.html

LawrenceA
Lupita Tovar (1910-2016) - Mexican-American actress Lupita Tovar has died at the impressive age of 106. After being discovered by documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty while visiting Mexico City, Tovar was put under contract with Fox and cast in many of the Spanish-language versions of their current releases. Tovar became a client of talent agent Paul Kohner, who convinced Carl Laemmle at Universal to start the same practice of filming simultaneous Spanish-language versions of their films. This led to Tovar's most famous role, the lead in the Spanish-language Dracula (1931). Around this same time she returned to Mexico to star in the very first sound film made there, Santa. In 1932, Tovar married Kohner. In 1936, they welcomed their daughter Susan Kohner, later an actress and Oscar nominee. Richard Kimble
http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/jerry-schatz-child-actor-in-our-gang-comedies-dies-at-91-1.12662062 Jerry Tucker of Our Gang Copiague resident Jerry Schatz, a former child actor who appeared in several “Our Gang” comedies, often as a spoiled rich kid, and co-starred opposite such screen luminaries as Shirley Temple, Ginger Rogers and Laurel and Hardy, died Wednesday morning of natural causes at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook at age 91, his daughter Renee Schatz Wolf confirmed. “He was a child actor, a disabled World War II veteran, a Mason, a Shriner, an Odd Fellow, but most of all he was our dad,” Wolf said. Schatz, who was born in Chicago and acted under the screen name Jerry Tucker, always downplayed his screen accomplishments. “Growing up, I thought everybody worked in the movies,” Schatz told Newsday in 2013. “I had no idea there was an outside world.” ----- Schatz’s screen debut — on loan to MGM — was in the Buster Keaton comedy “Sidewalks of New York” (1931), which was followed by his first “Our Gang” comedy, “Shiver My Timbers.” With his carrot-topped locks and freckled complexion, Schatz fit in perfectly with the rest of the gang and appeared in 14 shorts in the series, which was known as “The Little Rascals” when shown later on television. In his favorite episode, “Hi, Neighbor” (1934), he played a rich snob who uses his fancy fire engine to win the affections of a pretty blond girl. Schatz also appeared in some of the biggest movies of the 1930s including “Babes in Toyland” (1934) with Laurel and Hardy, “San Francisco” (1936), “Captain January” (1936) with Temple and “Boys Town” (1938). Still, Schatz was never enchanted with Hollywood, and in 1942 he joined the Navy as part of the demolition team aboard the destroyer USS Sigsbee. “Jerry Tucker died at the age of 16, and Jerry Schatz was reborn in the Navy,” Schatz said. “It’s not that being in the movies was anything that was bad. That’s just not my life.” He was awarded the Purple Heart after suffering a permanent leg injury when a piece of shrapnel was caught in his leg during an attack on his ship during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. “He talked about the movies, but if you asked what he was most proud of, it was his Navy career,” Wolf said. The updated version, titled "The New Odd Couple," aired on ABC during the 1982-1983 season. Former "Sanford and Son" star Demond Wilson played sportswriter Oscar Madison. The show's executive producer was the late Garry Marshall, who was the showrunner for ABC's 1970s version of "The Odd Couple" that starred Tony Randall and Jack Klugman.
