TopBilled
Two days ago, on what was her 99th birthday (and I did not know it at the time), I found a letter I once received from Jean Rouverol. Jean was a professor at USC in the 90s, and when I went to film school, she taught two classes I took. A few years after I graduated, I was living in Asia and she wrote to me there. Her husband was screenwriter Hugo Butler. She wrote a book about their experiences in exile during the blacklist years. It's called Refugees from Hollywood. I highly recommend it. She was the wife of Hugh Beaumont and appeared in a film with him in the 1940s. She also had a small but memorable part in Hitchcock's SABOTEUR. AndyM108
Kay Starr is still alive? So glad to hear that! Here's her biggest hit: I've probably heard Starr's version of "Wheel of Fortune" 20 times in the past month, ever since the soundtrack from L.A. Confidential began its occupation of my car's CD player and announced it had no intention of leaving. That may be the greatest movie soundtrack of all time, at least if you don't count adaptations from plays like My Fair Lady.

That may be the greatest movie soundtrack of all time, at least if you don't count adaptations from plays like My Fair Lady. That is a terrific soundtrack. It includes two great songs that premiered at the New Amsterdam Theatre in the 1920s: "Look for the Silver Lining" from Sally; and "Makin' Whoopee" from Whoopee (a show which also introduced the song "Love Me or Leave Me").
