Shirley Temple + Summer of Darkness

Is anybody else appreciating the supreme irony of juxtaposing the original "Little Miss Sunshine" as SOTM with the "Summer of Darkness" this July on TCM??!!  I'd say it is a programming coup.

I'd say they're not far apart....

(although I have to admit Shirley's work is nowhere near as dark and creepy as that of Margaret O'Brien.)

Yep  --  At least Shirley didn't bury any of her dolls (so far as I know.)

I'm certainly looking forward to the Shirley Temple movies, some of which are TCM premieres.

Tonight I'm especially looking forward to "Now and Forever" with Carole Lombard and Gary Cooper

and "Curly Top" with John Boles.

Incidentally, if I remember correctly Dorothy Dell (who appears in "Little Miss Marker" ) was supposed to co-star with Cooper until her tragic fatal auto accident. So Carole Lombard took over her part. Ironically less than 8 years later Carole died tragically in a plane crash.

I keep hearing Dick Powell or John Garfield in their best noir voiceover saying (about Shirley Temple):

"She was a dame but not like any other dame I ever knew . . . "

I'm checking this on my phone, so I don't have the option of clicking the "i like" button, and LOL is not really my thing, but in response to this remark from you i say:

"ahahahahahahahahahahaha!"

well played, good sir.

in all seriousness though, Shirley Temple matured into an absolutely gorgeous teenager and I could see her perfectly in any number of mid forties noirs. (the step daughter roles in DOUBLE INDEMNITY, maybe even POSSESSED come to mind immediately.)

not only was she a knock out, but she had a kind of innocence and purity to her the would have contrasted wonderfully with the dark elements...yet one can see how her voluptuousness could lead to a downfall.

It's the TEMPLE OF DARKNESS . . . and it lurks beneath.  Where the cool, calm and perfected veneer masks a sinister underpinning.  Come and explore the murky darkness in "REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK CEMETERY".  Where dolls buried for a hun'erd years come back to life!  And prey on the living.  And give them splinters!

      See Shirley smile . . .

     See Shirley play . . .

     See Shirley KILL!!!

     Muhahahahahahaha!

She HAD to brighten up Baron von Frankensteins' life--but sunshine didn't take over the place automatically--so she went inside & the nice housekeeper gave her hot chocolate to drink--she even ate the pink marshmallows, to be polite--the last thing she remembers is a HUH huh huh sound.

Now--500 years in the future--she is mankinds' only hope--in a world where Big Bird has left Sesame Street & gone to The Dark Side----where colors have been outlawed & parrot McFeathers are thrown to the remaining  jailed populace every other Tuesday--& are showered with Tab every other Thursday---

See Shirley Dance!

See Shirley Shred!!

See Shirley Mince Ham!!!

See Shirley KILL!!!

It's Shirley Scissorhands vs.  The Big Black Bird!!!!

This does sound rather insane ..

Animal crackers in my soup

monkies and rabbits loop the loop,
Gosh, oh gee, but I have fun,
swallowin' animals one by one.
In every bowl of soup I see,
lions and tigers watching me,
I make 'em jump right thru a hoop,
those animal crackers in my soup

When I get hold
of the 'Big bad wolf'
I just push him under to drown.
Than I bite him
in a million bits
and I gobble him right down.
When they're inside me
where its dark,
I walk around like Noah's ark
I stuff my tummy like a goop
with animal crackers in my soup

Said in a whisper: "even the dead ones."

that kid could freak out Boris Karloff.

That's right.  Not only did she bury her dolls, SHE DUG THEM UP, too.  Clearly she was

a candidate for therapy long after the World's Fair.

Composing this was time well spent. Ah, the dark side of ST!

I understand that Leslie Van Houten and Susan Atkins were big fans of Shirley Temple movies.

HA!

When I first heard that song, while watching the movie it was in when I was but a little tyke, the only "animal crackers" I was familiar with were those animal shaped cookies that came in that "Barnum's Animal's" box with the fabric strap across the top.

At the time(and even now) I thought THEY wouldn't really taste too good in soup!
