The USO has been a tremendous morale booster for our military forces all over the globe. War is war, and it stinks (I hope I can say that), no matter the decade. It's interesting, however, to see the names and the variety of entertainers who have performed or have gone overseas just to shake the hands of the men and women in our nation's military who have been in harm's way.

Al Jolson

James Cagney

Fred Astaire

John Wayne

Roy Rogers

Danny Kaye

Hattie McDaniel

Eubie Blake

The Andrews Sisters

Betty Hutton

Marlene Dietrich

Ginger Rogers

Rita Hayworth

I like how you and Gipper both included some of today's stars in your lists. Nice job!

Excellent list, Marsha. The two I've quoted remind me of GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (another story about miscegenation) and RAIN MAN.

Also, we could mention MASK-- which covers the angle of teen disfigurement.

ANATOMY OF A MURDER was shocking to talk so frankly about rape

All realistic slavery movies-- 12 YEARS A SLAVE comes to mind, and ROOTS on TV (which traumatized me)

Any holocaust movie is pretty shocking, but JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG is my top pick because it has actual horrifying footage of the real thing

Unlike a work of 'fiction' like KINGS ROW or PEYTON PLACE, these titles are based on true stories-- which makes them all the more shocking.
