Interesting. Thanks for showing us examples where women are depicted as central figures in this sub-genre.

How times change. In the 1930's, it was men in stripes. In the 1970's, it was women in a more adult situation. Yet, it was still chain gangs.

Yes, maybe more as an exploitation genre in the 70s. Though I think the precode stuff from the 30s also exploited the issues.

In "The Band Wagon", directed by Vincente Minnelli, Fred Astaire discovers that a famous theatrical location has been turned into a penny arcade on Broadway.

This depresses the dancer.

Then he encounters a shoeshine man, who not only shines his shoes but who also dances with him-- giving him a shiny new perspective on life and his career.

Thanks for mentioning that. Obviously today's category can include penny arcades as well as video arcades.

1. Footloose (1984):

-2 Integral scenes in the film. The first at the Drive-In when Dancing in the Sheets Play! We find out it's a no fun town. The second time, when they're taking the arcade machines away and Sarah Jessica Parker's character utters something like "I don't believe this town." That's where we find out Lori Singer's character is intrigued by Kevin Bacon's character. (I LOVE the OLD Footloose movie)!

2. Terminator 2 (1991):

-The John Connor character is playing arcade games, and Arnold Schwarzenegger saves him from Robert Patrick. I love me some Arnold Schwarzenegger!

3. (Television show, but I hope it's allowed). Beverly Hills, 90210 (1993):

-Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth's characters go out with guys from "Princeton", but it's Princeton School - making boys into men! A young Seth Green is one of the dates. Brenda and Kelly's characters compete at one of the arcade games as the champ.
