Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring, 1971 television film starring Sally Field and Eleanor Parker. Some scenes show the very unglamorous necessity of scrounging other people's leftover food at outdoor restaurants when one decides to live a wanderer's life.

Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring: the title and Sally Field in the starring role makes the film sound like a comedy, but it was quite a surprise, as I recall. It's been a while since I've seen it, but I think I can still recommend it!

"The setting is Reno":

Born to Kill (1947): Claire Trevor meets Laurence Tierney in Reno, Nevada, and the film starts there.
