Well I thought of Knotts on The Andy Griffith Show but in one episode Barney was said to have a nice singing voice. And despite his occasional on-the-job blunders, he was still a competent lawman or else Andy would have had to fire him.

It's been a while since I've watched Andy Griffith but I'm not sure that I'd call Barney competent. Didn't Andy only give Barney one bullet that he had to carry around in his pocket? There probably wasn't a deep pool of applicants in Mayberry. 😉

They sort of dropped the family connection as the series went on. But Andy probably did feel beholden to keep Barney employed.

Actually, there were 2 episodes that dealt with Barney's lack of musical skill, trying to join the choir. In the first, someone sings for him off stage, and in the second it's discovered that Gomer has quite a singing voice.
chaya bat woof woof
Actually, Lucille Ball had a talent for getting herself into Ricky's show. I absolutely love Jean Hagen in Singin in the Rain (she steals the show for me). If you think about TV shows, how would you like to be a patient of House? More TV: Eva Gabor understood Arnold Ziffel (sp? - the pig) better than she understood recipe directions. Nick and Nora were always smarter than the police. For singing, Candice Bergen in Murphy Brown and that movie she made with Burt Reynolds and Jill Clayburgh Jean Hagen also couldn't act as L.L. (that voice was too funny) Many actors couldn't carry a tune so someone dubbed for them (Marnie Nixon). Also, many weren't able to dance in musicals, especially during balletic numbers (watch Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson in Kiss Me Kate or Gordon Macrae and Shirley Jones in Oklahoma - James Mitchell and Bambi Lynn (?) did the balletic numbers). I don't think most of the Partridge Family could sing (ditto the Brady Bunch)

But not long ago I saw one from season 3 called "Rafe Hollister Sings" where a local hick played by Jack Prince sings at a town benefit. In the early scenes while discussing the benefit it is mentioned that Barney has a nice singing voice. This was after the one where Barney joined the church choir and couldn't sing. So maybe he had now improved...?
