TopBilled
Great photos/GIFs yesterday! one thousand eight hundred sixty-second category Expensive movies The first million dollar movie in Hollywood was FOOLISH WIVES (1922). Produced by Carl Laemmle. BEN-HUR (1925) was the most expensive silent movie made in Hollywood. It cost nearly $4 million. CLEOPATRA (1963) cost 20th Century Fox $31 million. That would be $260 million in today’s economy.

TopBilled
The Lord of the Rings trilogy from the early 2000s cost $260 million. The Hobbit trilogy from the early 2010s cost $623 million. Keep in mind that is three movies for each of those price tags. The most expensive single movie, so far, is PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (2011). It cost $379 million to produce. And that’s 2011 dollars, so you’d have to increase that amount today with inflation…which would be $434 million now, in 2020.

TopBilled
one thousand eight hundred sixty-third category Costly flops HEAVEN’S GATE (1980)…its failure with audiences bankrupted the producing company/studio. THE BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES (1990)…its budget was three times more than its box office take. KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD (2017)…it cost Warner Brothers $175 million to make plus they spent another $100 million on marketing. That’s a $275 million price tag. But its worldwide gross was only $148 million.
