BunnyWhit
Though there were a couple films featuring the Cisco Kid prior to 1930, the film series actually began in 1930 and ran until 1950. Cisco was portrayed by Warner Baxter, Cesar Romero, Duncan Renaldo, and Gilbert Roland. Republic had the Higgins Family films. Paramount had the Aldrich Family films. There were a couple attempts at the Charlie Chan films, but the character really took off at Fox in the 1930s. There were some Lone Wolf silents, but the "real" series began in 1935 with Melvyn Douglas and carried on with Warren William. The Philo Vance series of films began with The Kennel Murder Case (1933) with the detective played by William Powell. It is, for my money, the very best of the bunch. Warren William and Basil Rathbone also portrayed Vance, and films came from several different studios. The Whistler films featured Richard Dix and later Michael Duane. William Warren (then Ricardo Cortez and Donald Woods) played Perry Mason in the series of the mid- to late-30s
