You are correct! She was a great actress.

I read somewhere that her husband Lew Brice used to watch THE PUBLIC ENEMY over and over (when it was first run in movie theaters) because he loved the way Cagney shut her up with the grapefruit. I guess he didn't like the way she talked all the time. Needless to say she did not stay married to him.

Clarke was only about 17 when she married Brice, who was twice her age.  Brice's sister, Fanny, didn't do much to help further Clarke's career, and so by mutual agreement the marriage didn't last very long.
