Global warming? Kurilskoye Lake freezes for first time in 10 years

With thermal waters, and the warming effect of the nearby Sea of Okhotsk, this unusual lake normally does not freeze over. But this year its famous Steller's sea eagles have been forced to relocate because the ice holes in which  they catch fish have frozen over. Two weeks of calm weather and low temperatures in February - of minus 20C - shackled the surface of the lake with a thick layer of ice.

Konstantin Lepsky, state inspector of the Kronotsky State Nature Reserve, said: 'When we patrolled the area, we walked along the lake in snowshoes for about 18 kilometres.

A new study released Monday shows that “extreme downpours” are hitting both the driest and wettest ares of the world with increasing frequency, and that global warming is raising the risk of the occurrences continuing for the rest of the century. The study was released by the University of New South Wales in Sydney inn the journal Nature Climate Change.

 

Study leader Markus Donat said that climate change which is projected until the year 2100 indicates “a continued intensification of daily precipitation extremes.” The study examined trends in the most arid 30 percent and the wettest 30 percent of the Earth’s land area.

Some places like the desert southwest gets heavy spring downpours but stay relatively dry during the remainder of the year.  Las Vegas has always been plague by these quick torrential downpours and have spent millions on a rain diversion system.

When Elon Musk setup to develop Tesla electric vehicles he was hoping to reduce the carbon footprint of the cars we all drive. A side effect of that being we should face less tax because electric vehicles produce no emissions, at least directly. However, in Singapore driving a Tesla is very expensive, not only because you have to import the car, but because there’s a huge emissions tax associated with each vehicle.

 

It sounds ludicrous, and it kind of is. Joe Nguyen, senior vice president of an Internet research firm, imported a Tesla Model S from Hong Kong for $400,000 (US$289,000). What surprised Nguyen was that on top of this cost the Land Transport Authority was demanding a $15,000 (US$11,000) carbon surcharge. How can that be when the car emits no CO2 when driven?

Extreme rainfall events in desert areas — like recent storms in Death Valley and Chile’s Atacama Desert — may be partly driven by cyclical climate phenomena like El Niño, but such storms could also become more common in coming decades as the global climate warms.

A new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change suggests global warming will boost rainfall in some of the world’s driest regions. Flash flooding in deserts could become commonplace, according to the researchers with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science.

I am AGAINST unchecked pollution, the industries need to mitigate the byproducts of our modern society. Our biggest problem is waste / garbage - the landfill issue
