Latest polling on Ontario election shows strong support for handgun ban

A large majority of Ontarians support a ban on handguns, according to a new election poll released Tuesday, just a day after the federal government tabled new gun-control legislation.

The poll, conducted by Nanos Research for The Globe and Mail, found eight in 10 Ontarians either support or somewhat support banning handguns in the province. Of those surveyed in the Greater Toronto Area, 82 per cent voiced support compared to 77 per cent in the rest of the province. Nanos randomly polled 501 residents between May 28 and 31 in advance of the June 2 election.

Canada is a big country Tom, which you well know. How does the handgun ban play in the rest of Canada?

I found this article from 2020 about a complete firearm ban polling at 52% favorable in Canadian cities with 31% against a total band and 17% neutral.

So I would imagine a ban on handgun sales would poll at least that well - 52% - in the same population.

But then you get out into rural areas and I would imagine sentiments are very different for a complete ban. For one, with no weapons at all, how would one go hunting? If you have property out in a rural area, how would you safely walk that property without a way to defend yourself from wild animals?

The Liberals are proposing legislation freezing sales and transfers of hand guns. That should be of no concern to hunters or rural residents concerned about wild animals on their properties. Hand guns, while not banned, will be capped in Canada.

As for that poll you sighted about a complete gun ban, it's no surprise that the highest support for it is found in Ontario and Quebec cities, while crossing the Ontario-Manitoba border headed west shows less enthusiasm for the idea. A complete ban of all guns, however, is not what is under consideration by the federal government at the moment.

"We recognize that the vast majority of gun owners use them safely, and in accordance with the law,"  Justin Trudeau said, "But other than using firearms for sport shooting and for hunting, there is no reason anyone in Canada should need guns in their everyday lives."

Unlike the quagmire of NRA politics in the States in Canada the federal government appears to be trying to do something about the increasing gun violence in society.

Thanks for replying. I knew that what was proposed in Canada was a ban on the sale of handguns, I just found that poll about a complete ban interesting in that it would have so much support, even in Canadian cities.

Hilarious. Right wing clowns talk here, with a banner running across the bottom of the screen right out of conspiracy nut whispers calling Trudeau a possible "love child" of Castro (ARE THEY SERIOUS!?!), declaring it "sick" that, among other things, the Canadian Prime Minister wants to cap hand gun sales and transfers in the country. Tucker says the government is trying to hurt its citizens (so nice that Carlson spells out for his brain dead viewers exactly what it is they're supposed to think).

Hilarious.  When a liberal (ie, Trudeau) is in charge in whatever country whenever inflation hits that liberal is to blame for it all.   And when a conservative (ie, Boris Johnson)  is in charge in whatever country whenever inflation hits that conservative is to blame for it all.

There is no accounting for common sense around here.  Talk about going through life with partisan blinders on.

Guns Are Not to be Used for Self-Defense, Justin Trudeau Says

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that guns should not be used for self-defense. Instead, firearms should only be used for hunting and sport, the prime minister claimed. Trudeau recently called for a “national freeze” on the sale of handguns in the nation, which would build on the nation’s strict regulation of long guns.

By Alex Parker | Jun 11, 2022 11:45 PM ET

What would you do if your school made you confess to a crime?

To participate in a recent Zoom call, students at Toronto’s George Brown College were reportedly given a choice: Sign an admission of white-privilege land theft, or lose the opportunity to take part.
