MadCap
Early this morning (Oct18), probably sometime between 5am and 7am, an old B&W documentary about Morocco was featured. The narrator was an ignorant bigot and he often made fun of the cultures and living conditions of the natives. Although I found it offensive I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. I was wondering if anyone on this board may have seen it or know its title. It does not appear to be on the TCM schedule, so I assume that it may have been used as a short filler between two other movies. I'd love to find out when it airs again so I can tape it and watch this pompous lowlife whenever I need a good laugh. markfp2
I wouldn't blame the narrator. He was just doing his job. Got paid to read what somebody else wrote. Not that I'm defending what was said, I didn't see the film, but back in those days, people saw things differently than we do today.
ayresorchids
I wonder if it was some kind of Pete Smith comedy short. His narration often took a rather sneery tone.
RCG
I'd have to agree that it is most probably one of the old Pete Smith travel specialties. And his humor was often sarcastic or dry in nature. Even though some content would be seen as bigoted now - it wasn't out of line with most movie content back in those days. Many of the old films and "one reel wonders" are riddled with terms that would cause much controversy in this era. As I watch some of the old movies I am in awe of some of the things that are said or the way some people are portrayed. Take for instance that great classic that gives such an accurate portrayal of people that have smoked marijuana - "Reefer Madness". LOL
kenwal34
Speaking of REEFER MADNESS and the Pete Smith shorts, actor Dave O'Brien was featured in RM and also was featured in many of the Pete Smith shorts. O'Brien was featured mainly in poverty row westerns and features. Yes ,that was a different time and ,right or wrong, attitudes were much different than they are today. nickdimeo
Nice to see Dave O'Brien get a shout out! He's one of my favorite lousy actors (nice oxymoron). O'Brien is very good in the Pete Smith shorts cause he doesn't hardly ever talk in them (he probably would of been a good silent screen star). I like his so-called acting in the East Side Kids movies. Long Live Dave O'Brien!
