A challenge to name this movie

For a few years I have been trying to find out the name of a movie which I watched a portion of but do not know what it was called or remember specific actors. The movie was B&W, set during the depression and basically was a story of a guy who visits a farm and helps the couple [or family I do not remember] search and strike oil. The rogue man then departs at the end of the movie for what is assumed to look for oil again somewhere else. I almost remember him driving off with his belongings packed in the vehicle. The relationship evolves into a close one for the cast but the man must hit the road in search for another challenge. Great flick. Wish I could tell you more but it has been so long. Thanks for any suggestions. I do not believe it had BIG BIG names, but again I do not remember.
