Beyond the Rocks

Has anybody caught a screening of this rare Valentino-Swanson film? I'm eagerly awaiting the DVD release. I heard the movie is "just ordinary" and not really different from other movies at the time except it has Valentino and Swanson in it. Since they are both big favorites of mine I'm sure I will enjoy it no matter what.

Hi Jack... You're right, Beyond the Rocks (1922) is a pretty standard early romance film. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it tends to be Victorian in its outlook. Not unsurprising, since the Elinor Glyn novel on which the film is based was published in 1906, shortly after the Victorian era ended.

The Milestone DVD of it, however, is not completely restored. I was disappointed to find that the picture contains numerous scratches and artifacts, and quite a lot of visible decomposition. Several frames are missing, leading to a LARGE number of "jump cuts," and there are also two key scenes missing: the tango dance, and the pageant scene.

I'm told that Beyond the Rocks was "restored" to only the first degree -- meaning, I think, that the owners of the film made it just watchable enough to bring to market. I agree that it is watchable, though the physical defects in the image quality are distracting. Perhaps someday, somebody will spend more time working on its restoration. One can always hope.
