Original Horror Films

Why doesn't TCM ever play any of these horror films? Dracula with Bela Lugosi, The Invisible Man with Claude Rains, The Wolfman with Lon Chaney Jr., The Mummy with Boris Karloff. I know they play Frankenstein, King Kong and the silent Phantom of the Opera which I do appreciate. But - do they ever play the ones I mentioned? I can't remember if I've seen them on TCM (don't think so but if I did then it hasn't been for a long time) OR if I saw them on AMC before it went to the dogs.

TCM Programmer is you're listening, could ya, would ya - I already know should ya......yes! Please! :-)

Certainly. I would even say they were ubiquitous in the past couple years -- showing up on the schedule quite frequently. They have played Dracula, Wolf Man, Invisible Man and the Mummy quite a bit in the past but probably not within the past year or so. Since TCM does not own but rent out the Universal films, perhaps they don't have the rights to play them at this point.

I am guessing the lack of Universal horror films recently has to do with Universal releasing the Monster Legacy Collections. Maybe Universal didn't want them played while the DVDs were fresh out, but hopefully we will see them on TCM again in the future.

That Universal set came out at least four years ago though. That's when I bought it. They have shown those movies here and there, but I wish they'd beef up the horror movies around Halloween. This past Halloween was like this Christmas with the skimping on the movies. I'd even like to see the Hammer horror movies on TCM. Or even early Roger Corman movies.

I have noticed that there are going to be some good horror movies toward the end of January. Thanks TCM for that. I agree with you about the old Hammer films, my son loves Christopher Lee, due to Lord of the Rings, and he's never seen him as a young horror star, which I think would be fun.
