Jake's Trump Thread -- Make America Great Again

Is the Party Over for Bushism?

By:Pat Buchanan | July 19, 2016

Neither George W. Bush, the Republican Party nominee in 2000 and 2004, nor Jeb, the dethroned Prince of Wales, will be in Cleveland. Nor will John McCain or Mitt Romney, the last two nominees.

These former leaders would like it thought that high principle keeps them away from a GOP convention that would nominate Donald Trump. Petulance, however, must surely play a part. Bush Republicans feel unappreciated, and understandably so.

What Mr Buchanan seems to forget is that the Bushes are a very tight clan. I remember when Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau did a bit about George H. W. Bush's becoming Ronald Reagan's running mate. In a subtle reference to Nelson Rockefeller's putting his considerable wealth into a blind trust to become Gerald Ford's vice president in 1974, Trudeau had the senior Bush place his manhood in a blind trust. And the cartoonist always depicted Bush as invisible.

When the younger Bushes complained about Trudeau's running gag, he began drawing them as invisible people, too.

Trudeau's depiction of W. in "Doonesbury"

So does anyone expect a family as proud as the Bushes to support Trump after all the nasty things he said about Jeb and George W. during the Republican primaries and caucuses? It wouldn't surprise me if they all vote for Clinton in November.

Despite W.'s shortcomings and many misguided decisions as president, his father is likely to be remembered as a good Commander in Chief. And the odds are he won't be the only Republican beaten in a presidential election by a Clinton.

If any producer is thinking about making a movie

Rudy Can Fail. Giuliani is a living example of the old saw

that it is (slightly) better to be a has been than a never was.

Great first night? Absolutely everything has been a misstep so far, according to all the commentators.
