I just read on the internet that actress Shelley Winters has died at age 85. The 4 time Oscar nominee and winner for "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "A Patch of Blue" earned her place in movie history.

I for one will miss her. May she rest in peace.

Hello,

What grievous news......

Shelley Winters was one of a handful of women who were actresses and stars at the same time.

Her role in "A Place in the Sun" alone dubbed her an actress; and of course, she went on to win Oscars for "The Diary of Anne Frank" and "A Patch of Blue"... Well deserved!!

And, her dive into the water in "The Poseidon Adventure" had the whole theatre cheering and standing up in the theatre when I first saw it. That's star power....

Yes, you could love her, hate her, strangle her or kiss her -- and sometimes all in the same performance -- but she was a star not to be ignored.....

R.I.P. dear Shelley

omg...i loved shelley winters. one of my fave actresses and boy could she act. it's strange because earlier this week, i saw an elderly lady at my job and she looked just like shelley. i told her that and she said people have been telling her that since the 1950's. she looked dead on her. and i just ordered an 8x10 for her to autograph, but i guess it's too late now. wow!!! may you rest in peace, shelley.

I've been a fan of hers ever since I first saw her in "A Place In the Sun." She gives such a heart-breaking performance in it. And I've loved her other roles, espescially when she was playing a mother, comedically, like in "Lolita," and "Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell," and very dramatically, like in "A Patch of Blue." I even loved her as the old lady piano player in "Stepping Out," she was very funny in it. She really could play anything, since she was so versatile an actress. And considering her roller-coaster of a life, it's good to know that she made it to 85.

May she rest in peace.

Moviejoe, I followed Shelley Winters career ever since she played the svelt saloon girl in "Frenchie", she was quite a looker then.

And of course she proved her acting abilities with her dramatics and snagging 4 Oscar nominations.

I would like to see the movie "Let No Man Write My Epitaph" in which she plays a drug addicted slum mother. It's quite a performance.

I expect that TCM will present a day of movies in her honor, which we won't see anywhere else but on the classic movie station.

I was also saddened to hear of Shelley Winters' passing. I'll never forget her fantastic performance in "A Patch of Blue." I think it's rather a shame that the news reports solely associate Shelley Winters with "The Poseidan Adventure" when her career was much more than one picture.

I'll also look forward to seeing a tribute to her on TCM.

I can't believe it. I love Shelley Winters she is a wonderful actress she could play them all. We had just seen her on a marathon of Roseanne and she gave it all her gusto and stole the scenes from the other actors. I love how in one episode where Beverly(Roseanne's Mom) goes home to mother who was played by Shelley and the scene plays out in the living room but to a movie buff there are pictures of Shelley in her early career. She looks so beautiful. I plan on watching A Place in the Sun tomorrow. The boys and I enjoyed The Pisodeon Adventure very much and I just told them of her passing. She will be missed. There is no replcing talent like Shelley Winters. My condolences to her families and friends. I will never forget the way Shelley became the role she was in, she owned it-what a great talent. Thanks for letting us know mongo I hadn't heard about her passing.

This is indeed a shame, if not unexpected given the news towards the end of 2005. I don't know a lot about her off film life, apparently it was over the top, but I do know that she's left us with some excellent on-screen performances. She was brave enough to take unflattering roles playing unpopular characters, women who weren't wanted or with ugly personalities and/or appearances, and she played them well earning much, well deserved recognition. My condolences to her family.

Thank you for starting this thread, Mongo. I was sure that you would. I also wish to extend my sincere Condolences to her family and many friends, along with anyone in the film community who knew Shelley Winters, and valued her exceptional acting skills and contribution to film, her work in The Actor's Studio, and the way in which she lived her life off-film, which radiated with the same kind of courage and integrity I easily equate with Kate Hepburn. I will miss her very much, too....but, fortunately I have collected many of her best films, and will continue to watch them with fond memories of this dear lady. ML

She was such a gutsy actress.....she was so good that she made you hate her. She was a true artist and a great loss to us all. Thank goodness we have her on film to remind us of her range and her right on target on the good, the bad and the clueless...she was one of the great ones.

Mongo -

Today is the 21st and I just heard. I was reading Tony Franciosa's obituary on Theatermania.com and it said that Shelley Winter had passed away a short time ago. I was floored and came right over here, hoping that you had written something. Thank you.

Thanks also to Vecchiolarry - a warm and loving tribute.

It's funny (strange), but Shelley seems to have always been a part of my life. I will miss her but never forget her. She was a wonderful actress with great range. People forget that she worked in the theatre often and to great acclaim. I saw her once in The Effect of Gamma-Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. She was mesmerizing. Shelley was an actress and she acted; if she didn't have a film role, she was usually out on tour or on Broadway.

Tony and Shelley met in the Broadway production of A Hatful of Rain; she writes about that production in Actors Talk About Acting.

As for Career, it is one of my favorite plays and movies of all time. Read the play - the script is better than the movie (they had to beef up the roles played by Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine for the movie version). Still, a good movie, and Tony is terrific - and heartbreaking.

Both Shelley and Tony made movies which will live on long after them. Remember Wild is the Wind? With the incredible Anna Magnani? Anna is also gone; I guess it's true that if we live long enough we outlive all our friends.

I send my best wishes to Shelley's daughter and to Tony's children; their parents were much loved and will never be forgotten.

Where is lzcutter? I'm surprised she hasn't been heard from (I always enjoy reading her comments).

Thanks again, Mongo. I agree with you completely; the lady was an actress and won't be forgotten. I also remember her as Frenchie, during her sex-symbol days. And remember her in The Big Knife? A terrific movie about Hollywood. And those sexy farces she made with Farley Granger? I think he's still around, isn't he? I saw him on Broadway years ago in Deathtrap.

Keep up the good work, Mongo. It's reassuring to know that you are always here.

Ralph,

Thanks for thinking of me. I posted about Tony and Shelley on Mongo's "Gone Without Fanfare" (as Larry so sweetly pointed out).

I've been laying low due to all the animosity that has sprung up on the boards over the Miyazaki films, anime in general and the constant TCM is turning into AMC posts.

As for where is the tribute to Shelley that one poster below asked about. TCM has rescheduled this Monday for their day long tribute to our beloved Shelley.

She'd probably say "Why go to the trouble for me" but I would hope we would all reply because we want to thank you for all the wonderful roles you gave us over the years.

Hi Lynn, Ralph and Mongo,

I did actually see a 'TCM Remembers' in the early morning hours about Wednesday or Thursday on Shelley Winters. It had several photographs of her in early career and later character too. I've just seen it the once.

Perhaps on Monday TCM will repeat it all day???!!!

Larry, I also saw the TCM Remembers clips of Shelley Winters, from scenes of some of her films including "Lolita", "Night of the Hunter" and "He Ran All the Way" with Garfield. I'm certain that TCM will continue to show it for at least a week.

Thank you, Liz - I'd been wondering where you were. I don't get here that often and always look for your postings. Your posting on Shelley Winters death brought a tear to these old eyes.

Mango and Vecchiolarry - thanks to the both of you for always being so kind and responsive.

Ralph
