Regular time slot for Anime

I have been a long time watcher of Adult Swim and also an active member in their message boards. Tonight I saw the first commercial for the anime movies that TCM has had on lately. On the [as] message boards a lot of the members love the anime movies and have started watching TCM regularly. But, also I was told that this block of anime will be ending next week. I hope that this is not the case, I always thought of TCM as a network with good movies but not something that I would watch all the time, I considered it more of my Dad's movie channel. I hope that TCM will keep the anime on in a time slot, anytime slot, not only does it bring in a lot of younger viewers, such as the adult swim group, but it also lets the us see the great anime that never got show in the US unless you bought it.

Again there is a buzz about the new block of anime TCM has put on don't just stop it now keep it going.

Keep up the good work Ted

i think that TCM should know if you post any where else also. I feel that if they see that we have come from other places to watch their anime spots that they would be more inclinded to keep it going. I post on [as] all the time, but if you post any other places like other anime sites let them know.

It?s obvious that these Animes are designed for kids, adolescents, and immature adults, That?s why their casts are made up of kids, adolescents, and immature adults. I suggest Time Warner take them to the Cartoon Channel because they aren?t ?classic movies?.

You kids go play somewhere else.

It is possible those viewers who would wholly appreciate watching Anime in a "regular time slot" could be served quite efficiently through AMC's programming rather than TCM's. Perhaps when this month is done they should take that plunge then make use of the other channel's message boards. I am sure they (that other network) would be willing to show more cartoons if asked.

Tip for Anime Watchers: Don't watch the dubbed stuff. In the original Japanese version they are much more enjoyable.

anime isnt just for the three groups of people you just listed and it isnt like these are the only anime movies in existence. By your logic then movies like the one on right now "John loves Mary" are for retirees and crabby old republicans who still love regan. Dont pigeon hole anime by the movies from one director, there are thousands of good movies that the US has never seen and they need a place to be shown. Turner has one progressive channel already that shows the very newest forms of animation but [as] does not have the time slots to show whole movies. theses anime movies are classics and right now TCM is the best place to show them.

I fully agree with Raskolnikov! I sadly missed the first two Miyazaki films this month. I really do hope they get an encore presentation in the coming months.

.............and all the regular TCM viewers can spend this time taking their heart medication.

I haven't watched any of these anime films before. I am sure they are good films, but I don't think that TCM is the place anime should be shown. When I turned TCM on and saw anime playing, I had to consult my cable company schedule because I thought TCM had been replaced by some anime channel. This is obviously just an idea to attract younger viewers to the channel and then hope they start to watch some of the vintage films.

The first poster in this thread should give TCM a clue as to what demographic audience they are attracting with this anime garbage. If I were TCM I would be very concerned that anyone that actually sat down and watched "Adult Swim" on the very misnamed Cartoon Network switched to my channel.

Think about it.

You know, I really shouldn't do this this late at night, especially after I've had a skinful of wine...oh, the devil with it. I'm going to speak out anyway, because I'm really ticked off now.

The attitude of some people on this thread who slap down blanket condemnation of anime as "garbage" and make sneering comments as to the kind of people who make it makes me wonder if they've even bothered to actually _watch_ the films they're sneering at. Even more; it makes me wonder just how narrow their criteria for "classic" actually are. In fact, it makes me want to say, "Smile when you say that, pardner!" I like anime and I do NOT think of myself as an immature adult (and here I'm going to bite hard on my tongue before I really start a flamefest).

(And _I'm_ someone who doesn't think TCM ought to be showing "Sleepless in Seattle", let alone recycling it every month or so. So those of you who think I'm going to plump for TCM to show everything under the sun, no matter when it was made, can just put away their arsenals.)

I'll be blunt. I think Hayao Miyazaki-san _does_ deserve the showcase on TCM that he's gotten this month. He's probably the greatest living anime director, and more than a few people in Japan consider him to be literally a living national treasure. I don't know that every one of his movies will stand the test of time - and to be blunt again, I think TCM does run its share of live-action movies that were, let's put it this way, the "B" on the double-feature bill back in the day; frex, what about Ann Sothern's "Maisie" movies? Does anyone really consider them immortals on the same level as "Casablanca"? - but I firmly believe some of them will.

I'm going to go back to the "Maisie" point because I think this is important. If TCM can run a bunch of formulaic flicks like the "Maisie" series and the "Falcon" series (and I recorded _that_ to DVD when it came on in '04, so you needn't fuss at me about that either), I don't see where people should go griping at them about playing a series of feature-length animated movies.

I also think - and I'm not ordinarily one to get all PC, either - that there may be just a little bit of ethnocentrism going on here. Just where do the people of any one country get off thinking that their definition of what is a classic movie is the be-all and end-all of that definition? In Japan, animation is considered to be just as respectable as live-action. There's just as much dreck and repetition in anime as in live-action, to be sure (just go down to the anime section at Best Buy or Suncoast and see for yourself; for my own part, if I've seen one giant-fighting-robot or magical-girl anime, I've seen it 8,725 times), but there's stuff to equal any live-action movie ever made, too. Consider "Wings of Honneamise" or "Akira", for example. Or...yes...Miyazaki-san. Or (I can just see people keeling over in shock left and right), right here at home, some of Pixar's works. Ten gets you one that fifty years from now, at least some people will be ranking "Toy Story" on the same level with "Fantasia".

Yes, TCM IS trying to attract younger viewers. Why is that a bad thing? To quite a number of these people, Hayao Miyazaki is beyond A-list stuff; they _do_ consider his movies to be classics. And here's the thing; once they've tuned in to the channel, then there's a fair chance of at least some of them being turned on to the live-action fare that is TCM's real bread and butter. That's a good outcome, at least as far as I see it.

*sigh* I'm going to get off my soapbox now. I was about to start ranting about how TCM could legitimately show the all-time 1960's stinkbomb "The Oscar" under the narrow rules some people want to pose, but I don't want to get into _that_ can of worms...

In my mid 60s, I have enjoyed the cartoons/anime. It was well done, unlike the trash, I have seen going under the anime name. I see no problem with the choices they have made in movies so far.

If they would only fix the schedule changes they made.

I checked over at the Cartoon Network message boards and they're talking about the Miyazaki flicks on TCM over there. That explains all the tantrum traffic this month ... I don't think these kids ever heard of TCM before this. Thank God for ADD, it'll be all over soon.

I wasn't going to say anything, because i had respected everyone's opinion on this board, but i do not appreciate the age bashing. IMO i like the month long tribute to Miyazaki by showing his films once a week for a month. I do not know what all the fuss is about showing famed international movies for a month, even though it is animated. And about what classifies as being classic, even ESPN has INSTANT CLASSICS. Time is not what makes a movie classic, the test of time is only a testament to its superior direction, acting, and story.

Anime is not only for young people. Apparently, though, some of them believe anime was just created! Do some research, kiddies, and find out the truth. My 15-year old and I love anime, watch all the movies we can find, and attend Animetheon every year (you wouldn't believe the variety of ages that attend these!) Those young people who hate to be stereotyped are often guilty of doing the same to other (older) people. Let's appreciate art in all forms and get on with enjoying it!
