katyscar11ett
I saw this movie when I was a kid and only remember one scene in it........naturally, a kid wouldn't forget this scene. Trucks were leaving a place and there was one soldier that some of the others picked on. He had found a small dog that he really liked and it was running along behind the truck he was in. Some of the guys told him to call it and bring it with them. He did call it and when it was within distance, someone shot and killed it.....and laughed about it. I remember this really disturbing me as a kid. I look for the scene whenever I watch a war movie but haven't yet found it. I have no idea who was in it but I'm sure someone will know the answer. :-)
jarhfive
scarlett, I remember the "man shoots dog" scene exactly the way you describe...every detail. You have pretty darn good recall! Unfortunately, I cannot think of the movie at this moment. It will come to me and I will do a little research--you got me hooked. I remember the young soldier was blonde, pallid and nervous. The 'shooting dog' soldier had a several days growth of beard and somewhat heavy-set. As I remember, the nonchalant killing of the dog was an anti-war message. Off the top of my head, two possibilites come to mind: Slaughterhouse Five Catch22 Both movies made late 1960's or early 1970's. Both anti-war theme. I will investigate further. jarhfive
scarlett, I was quietly meditating on the war movie question (actually, was half watching "Vogues of 1938") and..."The Victors" popped into my conciousness. From the IMDB listing for "The Victors" (1963): ...Three of the leading characters, George Peppard, George Hamilton & Eli Wallach are affected by the war in different ways. Hamilton's character becomes much more hardened & emotionally desensitized. Peppard is wounded, but recovers in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge. Wallach winds up in an army hospital from what appears to be burns to his body...Another scene has soldiers being transported to a different location taking shots at a dog, seeing who could kill it... Peter Fonda played "Weaver"--the young soldier. I have seen this movie two times on television. The first time I saw "The Victors", Cpl. Chase (George Peppard) visits tough as nails Sgt. Craig (Eli Wallach) in the hospital. Chase blusters into the hospital room expecting...who? Obviously not the man he encounters. In case you ever watch "The Victors" again, I won't go into further details about how the scene plays out. The meeting between these two men remains with me as if I watched the movie yesterday. The second time I saw "The Victors" on television the shocking scene was cut 90 percent...snip...snip. Thank you for asking the question. It provided me the chance to remember this very notable movie. From what I read on IMDB, a version that is not cut to pieces may no longer be in circulation. katyscar11ett
Rusty, thank you SO much. And you say that I have a good memory! ^^ Great remembering.......and wonderful research. I sure hope I get to see that movie again some day, and that it's not all hacked. That isn't good news, at all.
