river
I just saw this MGM short on TCM (in between Sunrise & She Done Him Wrong) and I missed the title. It was just instructions on how to stuff a duck but the narrator was hilarious about it. He was saying stuff like, if you put two eggs in it'll be cement, three eggs and it'll be concrete, etc. Thank-you in advance.
hlywdkjk
Now This one I know - (as I got the title wrong to someone else's inquiry previously) This was a Pete Smith short/specialty called "Menu". It was nominated for an Oscar in 1933, according to the 31 Days intro, for best novelty one reel short. My favorite line was a retort about "The Burp Of A Nation". And keep your eyes peeled for aniother short called "Penny Wisdom" which mines the same territory only this time sending in the home economist from the Los Angeles Examiner to help the hapless housewife whose husband is bringing the boss home for dinner. All I can say - "That poor cacker spaniel". Kyle in Hollywood
river
Thank-you so much! My favorite was his "mmmhm!" Is this available on DVD? I see you are collecting the shorts, I'd like to too. Do you know when they show them or should I be on TCM 24 hour from now on?
hlywdkjk
Not being interrested in the Super Bowl, I have had the luxury of just hanging out on TCM today and add to the tape I've set aside for recording shorts. If you want to do the same, I suggest downloading a monthly schedule and checking the run times of films against the time allotted between films. With 20 minutes between the end of 'Sunrise' and the start of 'She Done Him Wrong', it was very likely that at least a one-reel short was bound to show up. (Go ahead and say it. "You don't get out much, do you?" I really sound like a couch potato, don't I?. ) Anyway, ten minutes between films is enough time to insert a short or cartoon. 15 minutes and it you are practically guarenteed of seeing one. Over 15 minutes and you may get one or two different shorts or a two-reeler. I taped one yesterday about a WW2 hero narrated by Ronald Reagan that ran about twenty minutes. Using this method, tomorrow doesn't look very promising for shorts. There is time between Black Narcissus and Henry V (19 min) but the other films all follow one another rather quickly to say for certain a short may show up. Even I don't hang out on TCM 24 hours. It would start to feel like the channel was controling my television habits (and life). Having a schedule allows me to take control of my viewing. I don't know of any DVDs dedicated to a compilation for shorts save for a freebie you can get this month "while supplies last" at Barnes & Noble when buying certain MGM titles. But in April, TCM is showing a documentary named "Added Attractions" about the series of shorts popular in the 30's and 40's. Maybe they'll be generous in shorts programming that month. Happy Hunting... Kyle in Hollywood
