1996

1. Secrets and Lies

2. Fargo

3. The English Patient

4. Mother

5. Marvin's Room

6. Everyone Says I Love You

7. The Spitfire Grill

8. Shine

9. Jerry Maguire

10. Trainspotting

Also of note: Bottle Rocket, The First Wives' Club, The Mirror Has Two Faces, Grace of My Heart, Unhook the Stars, Jane Eyre, Emma, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Blood and Wine, Fly Away Home, The Preacher's Wife, Hard Eight, Twelfth Night, Big Night, One Fine Day, Matilda, Beyond Silence

Curiosities: The Evening Star (sequel to Terms of Endearment. Script is messy, and despite deaths, feels like a 2 hour sitcom, yet the performers do all they can to try to push it over)

Flirting with Disaster (Quirky with a capital Q. I like quirky films, but this was too much for me. Mary Tyler Moore is wonderful in it though.)

Mrs. Winterbourne (a Noir retooled as a broad comedy, Shirley MacLaine still does wonders with her too few scenes)

101 Dalmatians (live-action remake starts well but becomes Home Alone redux in second half. Still entertaining though, with Glenn Close having a blast as Cruella)

10. Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills

I remember seeing this the first time. It upset me more than any other film I had ever seen, I think. I was seething with rage at the miscarriage of justice. Since then, the story has developed and things have been somewhat addressed. There have been two sequel documentaries, another one done by a different group of filmmakers (2012's West of Memphis), and a fictionalized version in 2013 (Devil's Knot). I've also become much more cynical, pessimistic, and jaded, and stories like this don't surprise me any longer.

Bogie and/or CinemaInternational...is the Mother that you both listed the Albert Brooks movie? I remember when it came out, but I thought it looked awful and skipped it. Should I check it out after all?

Yes, it is the Albert Brooks film.  It tickled me.  I showed it to my own mother and she didn't quite get it though.

Yes, it is the Albert Brooks film, and Debbie Reynolds is exceptional in it.
