Is it okay if I post my 2002 picks yet, or should I wait a few days?

We usually wait until we are about to start the previous year's performances in the other thread. So 2002 lists next Thursday/Friday. This week was a bit premature because of the end of decade round-up in the performances.

2002, ah, I see a lot of kids films here, which makes sense at the time, even though most are disposable. Some good adult-oriented films make it a decent year, although not the match of 2001. Bear in mind also that ticket sales reached their modern-day peak (still only a fraction of classic-era attendance) in 2002. I have one 2002 film on tap for viewing soon, The Importance of Being Ernest.

LOL...wow, you both didn't care for Home on the Range. I haven't seen it, but what's so significantly bad about it?

It has been repeatedly called the nadir of post-2000 Disney animation for being too bouncy, simplistic, and uncreative to compare to the usual effort that Disney has traditionally put into its animated efforts. It's also a waste of the talents of Judi Dench, Steve Buscemi, and Alan Menken. Most people have said it's not suitable for anyone over the age of 3. And all of this coming from a fan of Disney and its animated films.

I think that to best understand Home on the Range is to put it in perspective. Computer animation started in 1995 with Toy Story and was all the rage after further Pixar films and DreamWorks' smash hit Shrek in 2001. Hand-drawn films were not doing well, films like Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Sinbad, Spirit. The only hand-drawn film that had gone over well was Lilo and Stitch. By around 2002, Disney decided to abandon hand-drawn animation. And they decided to make a break with it with the completion of Home on the Range. (Since then, they did Winnie the Pooh and The Princess and the Frog in handdrawn)

Home on the Range thus feels like an afterthought. The animation is very flat. The story might amuse a few toddlers but that is about it. Roseanne Barr and Cuba Gooding Jr. ham it up in the voice department. With the exception of one song (Will the Sun Ever Shine Again sung by Bonnie Raitt) the songs are exceedingly forgettable. If one didn't know any better they would think that this was direct to video..... But Disney's next film Chicken Little is even worse, while the one after that, Meet the Robinsons only has a triumphant ending keeping it from being on the level of these two.
