Wow! What a list, some of which I am familiar with and many not...are most of the films you listed relatively easily available? Actually the only films that I am really familiar with are those by Eisenstein...where do you find these others? As I have said in other posts I have no cable or satellite so maybe I could put the VHS/DVD to work and an exploration of Russian cinema might be just the ticket. Thank you for the idea.

Hi Yexel,

I have seen "Ivan the Terrible" and "The Battleship Potemkin" but several years ago... I enjoyed them very much.

I've also seen "War and Peace" on TV here last year.

But my favourite film is "The Russian Ark"...... Going through The Hermitage and The Winter Palace is one of my favourite things to do when I visit St. Petersburg.

I especially love The Jordan Staircase and seeing all those people descending that beautiful stairway at the end of the movie is one of my special treats. I own the movie on DVD and often play the ending just to get a thrill!!!

I have seen very few of those movies listed, but I'm definitely interested in catching a few more of them. I went through a Russian literature phase when I was a junior in high school -- I've probably read all of the "great" Russian novels.

The list you posted is great...I'll definitely be on the lookout for some of those movies!

Maybe its just me, but I don't think I have ever been depressed enough to enjoy Russian Cinema. Maybe its the weather, the centuries of oppression, or everyone hitting the vodka too hard... The films that I have seen (admittedly few) just don't seem to have any spark. They either meander rather dismally or bounce about eccentrically.

I will give anything a try, maybe I have not seen 'the good stuff' yet.
