path40a
That's right, for the sixth season of TCM's ongoing The Essentials series, author/critic Molly Haskell will join TCM host Robert Osborne to introduce 30 "must-sees", beginning March 11 (& 12) with the airing of The Hustler (1961), and continuing with The Quiet Man (1952) & Brief Encounter (1945) through March (Duck Soup (1933), Winchester '73 (1950), Imitation of Life (1959!), The Four Feathers (1939), & A Place in the Sun (1951) in April). You may remember our original thread about Peter Bogdanovich: http://forums.turnerclassicmovies.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=61394&start=15#5942272 which unfortunately got bogged down with some OT sniping. It will be interesting to see how this new format (more like the guest programming gigs) works.
path40a
Well, what did everybody think of this season's first installment of "The Essentials"? I thought it was an interesting format. The (new, weekly) intro included our host (Robert Osborne), and Ms. Haskell, effectively defining the term "essential" and then, after a short clip from this week's film (The Hustler (1961)), the two began (rather abruptly, no introductions necessary, I guess) discussing it. Although I didn't really learn anything new about this particular movie, in their discussions before or after its showing, I thought it went pretty well. The two seemed to know one another, perhaps socially, and Mr. Osborne was able to correct her (as a friend would) with some of the facts about the film. Anyone else watch "The Essentials" this past weekend? Oh, one other thing, I couldn't find the thread we used to have here about look-alikes actors. After watching The Hustler (1961), I thought that James Woods certainly resembles George C. Scott. Message was edited by: path40a
CineSage
I thought that James Woods certainly resembles George C. Scott. Only if Eddie Bracken resembles Gary Cooper.
