moviemeister
I might be the only one out there who doesn't like TCM's 31 days of oscar. I never did. I for one am glad is over. With the exception of a dozen or so great movies, what a bore!
susanb
You are not alone. I always try to stock up on video in the month prior to "31 days" because as long as I have watched TCM it has always been one of the worst. Another month for which you need to pre-plan accordingly is August, they call it Summer under the Stars or something like that. Although not always the case, it can be just as grueling. overeasy
Ditto that, Susan! We tape like crazy the prior month, then hope that those recordings, along with what we have in our collection, will see us through the "31 Days of Hell." I will say this, however. For people who aren't real film buffs or who don't normally watch anything "old," I think the Oscar month may expose them to some interesting movies. Maybe, after watching some clunker from the 70's, which won for "Best Use of a Disco Soundtrack" they'll stay on and watch an older film...and start to see what the rest of us already know! On the other hand, maybe not. On a related subject, I'm pulling for Crash this year. Excellent movie which I thought would be overlooked, since it opened so early and didn't get much of a marketing push.... But I'm not holding my breath. susanb
Ron, I agree with your statement " I think the Oscar month may expose them to some interesting movies". Everyone isn't addicted to them yet, like me. All it takes is a little taste and then you want more. For that reason I live through the "Days" as patiently as I possibly can do. Maybe they threw in that horrible Lovers and Friends movie for us to use as a comparison for just how bad a movie can be. Makes a great compare-and-contrast lesson. bansi4
We got through 31 Days of Oscar and we are all still alive. I myself enjoyed the variety and the extra tid-bits about former Oscar winners/nominees, the shorts and many of the over 300 old films that was actually presented. Their six degrees of Kevin Bacon format was also neat. Now for some old gold mold in the coming months, on the only channel of it's kind.
sweetbabykmd
Susanb, I think you are referring to Lovers and Other Strangers? That was really bad, and to top it off it was in pan and scan. Moviemeister you are definitely not alone. Many of us resort to watching what we record off TCM during the middle of the night (which is when the better movies are run) during 31 days of Oscar, so we have something to watch during primetime. Thank goodness March and April are full of the great older films!
susanb
Yes, Lovers and Other Strangers was the title. My subconscious blocking mechanism tries to relieve such painful events. I knew it was something like that, but feared searching for the actual title would only cause further pain.
alix1929
Add my relief to the end of "31 Days of Oscar." He has certainly worn out his welcome, and I for one, am glad it's over. And now...on with the show!
mbmuva
I too am glad "31 days" is over. It's my least favorite month for TCM. I come to TCM to watch movies that aren't readily available, and that's not the case during "31 days". Also, I love TCM because they are all about classic movies, not modern day movies. They show alot more modern films during this time and that's why I don't tune in as much during "31 days of oscar". So yeah, it's over and J.MacDonald and N.Eddy are stars of the month, so I'm happy.
