TCM Schedule 3/15-3/16

Now this is what TCM should be doing all the time!

George Brent, Busby Berkley, The "I" movies that don't even include a single Susan Hayward title etc. This is the type of programming that got me hooked on TCM in the first place. My DVD recorder will be working practically non-stop until.......8:00pm Thursday when we are dashed back to reality with that awful Sonny and Cher garbage. No matter, that will give me time to label all of my DVDs and give my recorder a chance to cool down.

I'm TiVo'ing several of those films myself. Not *all* of the 'I' ones, but certainly a few of them....and all of the Busby Berkeley films. Most of the George Brent films too.

But then, I have enjoyed alot of the films and themes this week. Loved the "Divorce Remorse" theme last night - Watched "The Women" again..and TiVo'd a few of the others for later. And Monday was a pretty good day too - TiVo'd "Any Number Can Play", "Escape Me Never", "Too Hot to Handle", "Maytime" and "The Firefly".

Watched "Escape Me Never" earlier last night cus I've essentially been fixated on Errol Flynn lately. *lol* I'd never seen this film, and throughly enjoyed it - burned it to DVD, even!

A good week all 'round, IMO.

constarkel, if TCM ever returns to what it should be doing all the time, keep your eyes peeled for an archival footage piece called Hollywood My Hometown (perhaps you've seen it?). I've just started watching it, and judging from the number on my tape, it goes back a ways.

It's a gorgeous little documentary by Ken Murray and so far I'm in 1927 heaven.

I don't know Charles Farrell or Richard Arlen, but they were gorgeous. John Barrymore in 1927 without a moustache was also to die for!

Carole Lombard, Myrna Loy, even Gloria Swanson (now I know what the **** toad Joe Kennedy was after) were amazingly beautiful. There's a shot of a 15 year old Harriet Nelson!

constarkel, wouldn't it be nice if TCM deep-sixed the anime, sent the Sonny and Cher movies to Goodwill, donated Tootsie to a high school in Zimbabwie, and concentrated instead on finding more brain-meltingly wonderful stuff such as this 60 minute diamond? If they did, perhaps no one (including me) would ever again dare to intimate that they are turning into AMC.

Back to 1927 heaven.

P.S. Charlie Chaplin was annoying, even then. :)

I also agree that there are many great movies from the 30's that could be shown. I tend to miss some of the early great b-western. 1930-1938 were prime years for everyone from Ken Maynard to Gene Autry. Once in a while it would be great to spend a Saturday afternoon at the movies with Hoot, Sunset, Red, Tex, and the Durango Kid.

stoneyburke, I have never seen "Hollywood My Hometown" but I would love to. Too bad TCM doesn't include the shorts on their schedule.

Did you see that color short of the 1939 Pan-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco that they aired this morning right after "Treasure Island"? Seeing all of that in full living color was amazing. There is a site called "The Prellinger Archives" or something like that, that has public domain films that are free to download in a variety of formats...including MPEG2 (DVD). I have about 6 hours of amateur color footage taken at the 1939 World's Fair in NYC which is very interesting. Maybe that "Hollywood My Hometown" is available? I will check.

You know that I am in complete agreement with you on the anime alley, Sonny and Cher, Tootsie etc. My guess is that there are some people currently involved with the scheduling at TCM that would rather be working at MTV, VH1 or the Cartoon Network. This would explain the lack of focus that we have been experiencing as of late. I also have a theory that the most blindly supportive of TCM's scheduling are probably those that don't actually watch alot of TCM.
