ambernicole
Jane Powell is great! My favorite movies with her are probably A Date with Judy and Royal Wedding.
d120421
Although my favorite movie soprano is Deanna Durbin, I'm a big fan of Jane Powell's and had the great pleasure of meeting her once and chatting with her briefly. She was (and I'm sure still is) a charming and delightful lady. My favorite film of hers (and the one in which I think she gives her best performance) is SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. I also enjoy ROYAL WEDDING and some of her teenaged roles such as HOLIDAY IN MEXICO, LUXURY LINER and A DATE WITH JUDY. I find it interesting that her adolescent screen image is often described as the same sort of "Little Miss Fixit" roles Deanna Durbin played. It seems to me that in most of her "teen" roles the opposite is true. Unlike Deanna, whose characters were usually perceptive enough to identify a problem and devise a solution to it only to run into problems when the adults in her circle refused to take her seriously, I think Jane usually played a "Little Miss Cause It," whose misunderstandings and misinterpretations of another character(s) motives/situations CAUSE problems rather than solve them. Has anyone else noticed this? In any case Jane was a delightful and versatile performer who I think has been very underrated for many years. The recordings she made for Columbia while in her teens, which include several songs she never sang on film (and several she did) are charming and well worth checking out. Here's wishing Jane a wonderful 77th birthday! She's not only a real trouper, but a real survivor who's earned the happiness she's enjoyed in her marriage to Dick Moore over the past decade plus. ch3
Another longtime fan reporting in. I've been sold on the lovely, vivacious Miss Powell ever since age eleven when I first saw SEVEN BRIDES. In much more recent years, I've gotten to speak with her briefly after a couple of New York appearances, and she is as pleasant and kind in manner as you would suppose. Still very spiffy looking in a red miniskirt, too. I'm surprised you didn't sneak her in as an honorable mention in your "Best Figure" thread. Petite she may have been, but in TWO WEEKS WITH LOVE, ROYAL WEDDING, and the little seen THREE SAILORS AND A GIRL, she certainly proved she was a girl most leggy. JanePowellFan
Great replies Janie fans, sorry I've been away until now, yes I ought to have added Janie to the best figure thread but I guess I'm just so preoccupied with Janies pristine face that I end up overlooking her delicious figure! I think there ought to be more about Janie on the web, my tribute is very basic but I'm hoping its a start in the right direction. I watch a Janie movie almost every day, you may call it obsession but I don't care, I just love watching her!, I play three movies to death, 'The Girl Most Likely' 'Three Darling Daughters' and 'Rich, Young and Pretty' but 'Small Town Girl' is running them close for screen-time. I wish Janie had been used more in 'Hit the Deck' but what there is of her is divine, guys how about that scene where Janie stretches out on that bed whil singing 'Lucky Bird', everytime I see that scene I feel giddy! Awesome!!! TONY

Mamieka
I love Jane Powell! My absolute favorite is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. She had such great chemistry with Howard Keel and all of the actors playing the part of her brothers. My next favorites would be Small Town Girl, Royal Wedding and Two Weeks with Love. I also enjoyed Nancy goes to Rio, Holiday in Mexico and Athena. I've only seen bits and parts of Hit the Deck. I'll be keeping my eye open for it. edgeciff
One of my favorite and overlooked Powell films is THE GIRL MOST LIKELY. This was the last film to shoot on the RKO lot and I tthink Ms. Powell's last theatrical feature film. This one deserves a DVD release, hopefully in a Jane Powell box set. JanePowellFan
Edgecliff, GIRL MOST LIKELY is my favourite movie, yes, it deserves more recognition, Janie is superb throughout, in fact the whole cast is superb in each role. I love Janie as an indian squaw, I love Janie drunk, I love Janie jumping into the bay, I love Janie every moment of every scene, thank god they made this movie in colour, I can't believe this movie was a flop when first released, it is excellent. I think the movie has a nice message too, that money isn't everything! What about that scene with Janie on the billionaires boat, did she ever look more wonderful? oh Jane Powell you are so loved!!! JanePowellFan
Charlie, The only info that I have is from the web, I've reproduced the text here, the event is as follows, here is the venue: FILM FORUM 209 W HOUSTON STREET Between 6th AVENUE and VARICK NEW YORK Dual legends Jane Powell and Dick Moore share both a happy marriage and a similar background: both were popular child stars. ?Dickie? Moore made his screen debut at age one, playing John Barrymore as a baby in the silent Beloved Rogue, and, only a few years later, became one of the most popular of the ?Our Gang? (aka ?Little Rascals?) stars and Hollywood?s most in-demand little boy, appearing with Marlene Dietrich, W.C. Fields, Gary Cooper, and Shirley Temple (he gave Shirley her much-publicized first screen kiss). Following roles as a teenager and young adult (notably in Ernst Lubitsch?s Heaven Can Wait and the film noir classic Out of the Past), he retired from acting to start Dick Moore and Associates, a still-thriving public relations business. Jane Powell began her movie career, already a teenage singing star, in Song of the Open Road (W.C. Fields called her ?my little kumquat? in that picture). Her engaging personality and enchanting coloratura soon made her one of the most popular stars in movies. Cast typically as the girl next door, she starred in such fondly remembered musicals as A Date with Judy, Royal Wedding (opposite Fred Astaire), and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. After leaving Hollywood, she began a successful stage career that continues to this day. Among her stage credits are the hit Broadway revival of Irene and tours of My Fair Lady, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and many others. Though both were former child stars, Mr. Moore and Miss Powell didn?t really meet until the early 80s, when Dick was researching a book on child stars, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (But Don?t Have Sex or Take the Car), published in 1984. They?ve been happily married since. Tonight, Film Forum repertory director Bruce Goldstein and film historian Foster Hirsch welcome these two Hollywood icons ? now staunch New Yorkers. 7:30 TONY I'd give anything to see Janie speak live, but I live in England unfortunately. ch3
Thanks, Tony - and JackBurley, too. It sounds like a nice evening. Unfortunately, due to prior obligations, I can't get to New York that week. Maybe there'll be a press write-up or review or two that makes it onto the Internet. Charlie

metsfan
I loved the song she sang to Cliff Robertson in "The Girl Most Likely". It was called "Crazyhorse" if I remember correctly. edgeciff
JackBurley, there are several albums that Powell recording that have yet to make it on CD. Powell recorded an album for Verve in the late 50's that has yet to be reissued. I am holding onto the LP.
ch3
Edgecliff, "Can't We Be Friends" IS on CD as a very expensive ($40.00) Japanese import available from Amazon. It comes in a miniature LP sleeve duplicate of the original - instead of the traditional CD jewel box.
