JerryCalgary
I much prefer the original 1934 film in all departments. More charming and able actors - Colbert, Beavers, William & Washington, plus better written story and more skilled photography. The Ross Hunter remake is simply too lush, too glossy for my taste, although Susan Kohner gives a good performance. I wish the 2 early version of Back Street were more accessible, with Irene Dunne in 1932 and Margaret Sullavan in 1941. Incidentally, I love the opening of Universal's early 1930s films where the little plane putt-putts around the globe. I believe this was reproduced for the opening of The Great Waldo Pepper.
