JackFavell
The statue of David in Florence for me was a revelation. You could see the blood flowing in his veins- and I am not kidding! He looked so life-like- as if he were in between breaths and would walk right off the pedestal...... I like the Impressionists, especially Monet and Renoir, but I also like Berthe Morisot, one of the only female impressionists. She dared to paint at a time when it was complete folly for a woman to want to have a career; Van Gogh, absolutely great, he was so far ahead of his time. Dali was amazing- he could do anything- paint in any style, his sculpture too was very good. I always loved Michaelangelo's "Moses", too...so powerful...so awesome. My Mother loves Monet. One day I want to take her to Paris to the Musee D'Orsay and also to Giverny. When I was in France last, I got to see a huge exhibit of Cezanne in Aix-en-Provence, right where he painted and grew up. Marvelous! I also like Raoul Dufy, because his paintings are so filled with joy and light heartedness. The PRB (Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood) paintings are favorites of mine too, especially those that deal with Shakespeare, Arthurian tales and knights and fair ladies or pastorales. JackFavell
I am embarrassed to say that eight years ago, I tried to paint my living room in Giverny colors. You know, the pink and blue-green of Monet's house? It seemed like such a great, bold idea. Pink was a new exciting color to use, not too popular, but just coming into style. I chose a white with a tinge of pink for the walls, and then touches of a sort of grey-blue color for the curtains and accessories. I remember being a bit horrified as I rolled the pink onto the walls and realized it was a sort of animal cracker icing color. But I plodded on, because I thought it would look better when everything was put together. What I wanted it to look like- What it came out like-
coopsgirl
*If David did walk off that pedestal I'd sure follow him anywhere!* Well, you'd get a nice view that way . When I was in Paris a few years ago I went to the Musee D'orsay but it was closed b/c the people were on strike. I was so disappointed . Here are a couple of my fave statues that are both in the Louvre. *Cupid and Psyche* - this one is just gorgeous!! *Nike of Samothrace* - It looks like an angel but it's a greek goddess that looked after ships and sailors and stuff. She's in a pose like she's lighting on a ship. It really looks the wind is whipping her clothes around. I'm so curious what it would have looked like when it was new and she still had all her parts . MissGoddess
those strikes in paris can drive you crazy! I loved those pictures and yes! They're my favorite sculptures at the Louvre, too! Ever since I saw Audrey come floating out from behind Winged Victory in Funny Face, I longed to see it. It's a stunning piece.
coopsgirl
I didn't know that statue was in a movie, that's cool. I was equally amazed at just how the beautiful the Louvre itself is. It's hard to imagine that people used to actually live there. It's just gorgeous!!!
MissGoddess
Oh you simply have to see *Funny Face* Angie! I'm not a big musicals fan, but this one is irrisistible and it's filled with marvelous location shots of Paris. You'll swoon!
JackFavell
Oh, and Audrey Hepburn's clothes (I actually like her clothes even before she gets to dress up)! Nike was so beautiful when I was there! and she was up on that stairway- as if she would just fly right up and into the air! I almost got thrown out of the Louvre. I went to see the Michelangelo "slaves", I think it was. I turned down the hallway they were supposed to be in according to the map, but there was a rope across the path. I stopped for a minute. No one was there. I thought about it, then carefully started to step over the rope. You never saw so many security guards come out of nowhere so fast! I apologized and showed them my map and they said non non CLOSED!!!! Basically they were politely telling me to va t'en, scram, get out.
MissGoddess
lol! Great story, Jackie. Yes, you don't want to mess with the art of France unless you want an private tour of the Bastille! Funny Face has one of the best wardrobes of any movie. I've always adored the clothes Givenchy did for Audrey. What a peerless combination they made. coopsgirl
That is too funny!! I have a real penchant for wanting to touch things and I'm surprised it hasn't gotten me in trouble. I touched the side of the Rosetta stone in the British Museum and it's in a glass case now . When I was in Westminster Abbey the first time in '97, I stuck my arm through the bars around Mary Queen of Scots coffin thing and touched the side of it. It was really cool but my friend who was keeping an eye out was freaking out that my arm might get stuck. I have really skinny arms though so it was all good . April, that pic of Audrey and Nike is too cute. I'm sure I'll get around to watching that one one of these days.
MissGoddess
I'm so embarrassed to admit I went to virtually no museums or sights when I lived in London. I only visited the Tower of London, that's it! Was Mary in that coffin or had she been moved elsewhere? Forgive my ignorance. I was so disappointed to see a glass case around the Mona Lisa. Although, it's never been a painting I admire. coopsgirl
Yes, she's still in it. Maybe it was rude of me, but I've always been fascinated with her. She's lying next to Elizabeth I (another of my faves), which is ironic since it was Elizabeth, her cousin, who sentenced her to death. Elizabeth felt extreme guilt over it too. Here's Elizabeth and overall, Mary's looks similar.

MissGoddess
LADIES!! I just learned the most wonderful news in another thread in connecton with OUR DAY WITH GARY on Wednesday! Nothing TCM could have planned is equal to this: I'm going to avoid the board on May 7th. You won't see me anywhere near this place on that day. A traditional gentleman like myself shant dabble in such bad taste as that day shall bring on this board. I just cannot lower myself to partake in such revolting behavior. What a horrible day that is going to be. --- FrankGrimes Yay!! No one to spoil our fun!
coopsgirl
I *LOVE* that *Blowing Wild* pic!!! Yes, that is great news that we will be left alone to enjoy Gary?s 107th birthday. You know he doesn?t look a day over 87 . I had another wonderful Gary dream last night :x. Actually it was kind of a two parter with another dream I had a couple days ago. In the first one I was at a ballgame and he was playing (wearing Gehrig?s uni from *PotY* except he was just regular guy Gary and not Lou or a movie star) and he was my boyfriend and it was so cute b/c he kept looking at me and smiling and waving during the game. Then last night it started off sad b/c we had had some argument about something (don?t know what) and had kinda broken up . I worked at the offices in the ballpark and the team had been gone on a long road trip (like 2 weeks) and when they came back I left a note for him in his locker just saying that I wanted to talk to him. Well we played message tag for a while before we finally got a hold of each other and then we made up in a very amorous way , and he decided to retire and we were gonna get married. Dreams about Gary and baseball, it just doesn?t get much better than that :x. I?ve got another baseball story about the Astros game from Friday night that made me think of *PotY*. Citgo, who is one of the Astros sponsors, had a deal going where for every homerun the Astros hit that night, they would donate $10,000 to a kids muscular dystrophy charity and if we won, they?d kick in another $5,000. They had a luncheon that day and some of the players got to meet some kids with MS. Well, Miguel Tejada who we got from the Orioles in the offseason, was so moved by one of the little boys that he promised to hit him a homerun that night. They were talking about it before the game and then in the 6th inning he actually did it. When he was rounding the bases he had the biggest smile on his face b/c he said earlier he just wanted so bad to do something to make that boy happy. They cut over to the 8 year old boy who was there and he was definitely happy. He was standing up using his walker cheering for Tejada. Well as you can imagine, I was crying (heck, my eyes are tearing up now and I?m getting sniffly). They were talking to the boy right after that and he was so overwhelmed he could barely talk and about all he could say was ?I?m so excited?. Then to top it off we hit two more homers in a row after Tejada?s and in total we hit 5 homeruns and won the game so the charity got $55,000!!! They?re going to do that again once more during the season and I hope it?s another good game like this one was. Another thing that really got me and they mentioned it during the pre-game show, was on that day in 1939, Lou Gehrig?s consecutive game streak ended as he took himself out of the lineup. His last game came on April 30, 1939 (May 1st was an off day) and I know they added the thing in the movie with him promising to hit that crippled kid a homerun but still it just really got me since that is my favorite part. Babe Ruth did promise a kid a homer (there is some speculation though if he really did or if he just claimed he did after the fact) but both he and Lou did a lot of nice things for the kids who were fans. I?ve got one more baseball story and then I?ll shut up about it (ha!). A couple of weekends ago we went to visit my grandma who lives about 4 hours away where I grew up, and we found a vhs tape of one of my cousins little league games that my mom filmed from ?85. I brought it back with me and was able to transfer it onto a dvd. So we were watching it last night and as soon as we turned it on we saw my grandpa (my mom?s dad) who passed away 4 years ago standing at first as the 1st base coach. He was normally their 3rd base coach but there he was standing at first which was the side of the field my mom was filming it from. It was so cool to see that and we had to call my grandma and cousin to let them know about it and they were really happy too. I would have been 8 then, and one of my fondest memories from those little league days is my papaw giving me his cap and a dollar and I?d go to the concession stand and fill up his cap with bubble gum for the players . During one part of the game my cousin (who was always one of the best players) got a walk. Then he stole second and third and eventually scored. We were cracking up b/c he would always do stuff like that. Once he got on base he loved to run and he would steal a lot and also stretch singles into triples and homers even with the coaches yelling at him to stop. FrankGrimes
Howdy, Coopsy's Clarita -- What a very interesting post. All of which was surrounded by baseball. I really enjoyed reading about your days with your grandpa and your cousin. That was very sweet, very Americana. And I guess you were too busy trying to catch the boys instead of trying to play catch with your cousin. You ain't got game. On second thought... Howdy, Miss G(ary) -- LADIES!! I would have thought you would want me to be here on that day since I'm the person on the board who talks about Coop's movies the most. I guess all those countless hours I spent expressing my feelings and sharing my thoughts on Coop's movies were for naught. Well, it's best that I return to my lonely place now.
