Any Gary Cooper Fans?

Yes I thought about posting them here but with those widescreen shots they really mess up the ability to read on this thread. I have never seen the gunfighter but hopefully it lives up to all the hype from film critics that call it the greatest western (better than high Noon) to ever be made. I doubt it will live up to that kind of hype but it is interesting to see Gregory Peck with that growth of hair below his nose. I would say that Peck even looks more out of place with it than Gary did in Peter Ibbetson. I actually got use to seeing Gary in one after watching that picture dozens of times but don't think I will ever get use to the one sported by Gregory Peck.

OH MY GOSH!!!!! I?ve really never had any desire to go to New York, but I?m about 99% sure that I?ll be there that weekend :). That is just too cool a thing to pass up. In fact, I went ahead and bought three tickets to the lecture (I figure my parents might like to go too and it would be a fun trip for us since they haven?t really ever traveled much). Since it falls on a weekend we?d only need one day off from work and I can definitely swing that.

I?m so glad you found that except now I won?t be able to concentrate on work at all today ;).

I?m hoping my copy of *Garden of Evil* will come today. The arrival date was suppose to be between the 8th and 11th (the 11th was Sunday so I?m not sure why the email had that day listed) and I?m starting to get a little concerned. Our mail is so screwy around here sometimes and things either get lost or take weeks to show up when it should just take a few days. I actually just had one order from deepdiscount.com get lost in transit. They?ve reshipped it and I hope it makes it this time (blu-ray dvd?s of *Blazing Saddles* and *20 Million Miles to Earth*). The area where I live is growing by leaps and bounds and the post offices are really feeling the strain. I think they have finally hired some more people though b/c our mail used to come between about 2 and 4pm, then for a long time (several months, close to a year) it was coming between 5 and 6pm and now it?s gone back to the earlier time. It was also mother?s day weekend so that could be slowing it down even more.

> The one week Maria Cooper Janis is coming to your area and you're going to be out of town?! April, cancel all your other prior engagements, this is Gary's own flesh and blood! You must go!

I know, I know. I'm just sick about it because needless to say, I would LOVE to go to this event. I don't know why life is so cruel.

Is it unfair of me to hope something happens to postpone it? :P

Angie, remember you HAVE to go up to Maria and get a picture and autographs and tell her please, please, please that Gary's #1 New YOrk City fan is sick over missing this event and won't she please, please, please do it again!! And tell her about his little fan group here at TCM and..oh, heck you know what to say!!!

Theresa & Kim you guys should try to come to NYC for this as well. It would be worth it.

I promise to find a computer in Paris that night to find out what it was like so Angie be sure to post about it here ASAP afterward!! I'll even PM you my cell over there so you can text message me, ha ha!

Y'all are cracking me up!! I've been emailing back and forth with my mom about it this morning and she and my stepdad are real excited. I figured they would pick on me about it a little, I mean basically we're going half way across the country to watch some old movies and listen to a woman talk about her dad (ha!), but I think they are as excited as I am.

I would LOVE to talk to Maria but don't think I would be able to. I mean, like Kim said, she's his own flesh and blood and I would absolutely freeze up, just like everytime I'm around my fave Astro, Brad Ausmus (aka - My Sugarbritches). I want to be all calm and politely tell him he's my favorite player and how much he means to the team but instead my legs turn into jelly and I get temporary laryngitis ;). One time at spring training though I did yell at him 'Ausmus, you're my favorite player!' and he stopped and signed my baseball, he's such a sweetie :x. If for some reason I do get a chance to talk to her, I'll try my best not to embarass us :).

It's a pain in the rear to travel with a laptop so I'll probably be computerless that weekend. I'll update though as soon as I get back home.

*I bought a bunch of Gregory Peck over the last month. It's too bad that I missed the sale on these titles:*

*Twelve O'clock High*

*The Guns of the Navarone*

*Purple Plain*

*On the Beach*

*Yellow Sky*

*The Bravados*

*The Big Country*

*Roman Holiday*

*To Kill a Mokingbird*

*Gentleman's Agreement*

*Cape Fear*

*The Omen*

hey dan!!!

i think you will like most of these films if not all of them. gregory peck had an excellent acting style as gary did,but they were both extremely different in thewir styles.

i think you will especially like Roman Holiday if you already havent seen it. maybe you have.

Here's a cute pic from *Paramount on Parade*. Gary is standing with Mary Brian, then Fay Wray and Richard Arlen are to the left of them and Jean Arthur is the blonde in the behind Gary. I'm not sure about the rest though.

Theresa, Yes I've seen and own Roman Holiday and loved it. The ending was kind of sad though as they didn't get together.

I actually tried to cancel my last big order with no luck as my 32 inch 9 year old tube Panasonic TV went bad and now am getting a 42 inch Plasma Panasonic HD TV. I did get a pretty good deal on it as I am picking it up at Circuit City for 1099 with a free 300 panasonic surround sound system with a Panasonic 5 dvd player changer that upscales DVD to HD for free. So the TV is really only costing me 799. It will be great to watch all my regular dvd's in high definition comparable to Bluray. With my 4000 dollar lasic surgury this all will put me in dept for a little while but I just got my car payed off so that helps out.

Angie, I am sure you might bump into John when you are there as well. He now has listed on his site Fall of 2008 for his release of Cooper/Hemingway. I'll be interested in hearing from you on any news or rumors. The first movies I will watch on my new HD TV will be Garden of Evil, Man of the West and The Westerner. I am sure High Noon next month will look the most impressive on the set.

Also, I won't be buying a BLURAY player yet as I will be waiting for at least one Gary Cooper movie to be released in that format before I take the next step. I am sure that first movie will more than likely be High Noon as it seems like they are only releasing the really big movies on BLURAY at first. High Noon I think was the first movie to come out on dvd back in 1998 and am sure that once Lions gate goes blue that this movie will be re-released in High definition but I won't be waiting on that when it comes to getting the standard definition dvd next month.

April, sorry to hear that you won't be able to go see Maria. I'm sure that living in the same city as she does though that you will eventually catch up to one of her letures. I won't be able to make to this one as that is the weekend my brother is coming up to visit from Virginia.

That?s exciting about your new tv. You?re gonna love it! Most new dvd players are now upconverters, which means they take a standard dvd and get it close to high definition. My blu-ray player does this as well but some movies actually look worse when I watch them on that one. At least with my player, (Sony ? who developed blu-ray) most black and white movies look a little grainy. My copies of *High Noon*, *Meet John Doe*, and *Pride of the Yankees* have looked the best with no graininess at all while others like *Sgt. York* and *Peter Ibbetson* look bad on it so I watch those on my old standard player instead. Most color movies will look better but not all of them ( *FWTBT* looks great but *Unconquered* looks grainy). You?ll just have to test them out on yours and see how they look. I?ve noticed too that imperfections on the print like scratches that weren?t noticeable on my standard player are very obvious on my blu-ray player. This is probably b/c it?s trying to bring out more detail which results in things like scratches just being more noticeable.

Are you going to get HD programming? It?s just amazing how much difference there is between standard and high-definition. I have absolutely loved watching the Astros games in HD this season. It?s just about better than being there in person (and much cheaper ;) ). I?ve read so many people saying stuff like ?I don?t need to see whether someone has a pimple or not? but really, HD is much more than just seeing people in high-def. It?s the whole package of everything looking better (people, clothing, sets, landscapes, etc?). And honestly, I haven?t noticed any more or less pimples on anybody ? ha!. The best way I can describe it is it?s more like you?re looking through a very clean window at people instead of through a tv screen. I still haven?t gotten used to watching the games in HD and I keep mumbling to myself ?it?s like they?re right here in my livingroom playing ball?. I mean there is so much detail, you can even see the tiny holes in the mesh of their jerseys ? WOW!!!

That?s great news too about the Cooper/Hemingway doc!!!

Had to shoot my 11,000th wad here in Coopsville. It's become a tradition for me. :D

I am hesitant about getting an HD dvd player because of what you say about black and white movies, Angie. Probably 60-70% of my movie viewing (and even TV shows!) is made up of B&W titles.

However, you do say that everything tends to look better on an HD television, right? Because I'm certain to eventually trade in my Sony tube TV.

I was naughty and got myself a Sony portable dvd player to travel with. I just couldn't resist the idea of "portable Coop". ;)

Congrats on the 11,000th post, now get back to work :P.

It does stink that the dvd players (standard and HD) that upconvert cause some standard dvd?s to look less than great. I have plenty of room in my tv stand for both players so that works fine for now but eventually they will stop making standard players. Hopefully by then though, more movies will be out in blu-ray format and it won?t matter. Either that or they will upconvert better so that all movies will look good. It would be nice if there was some way to turn off the upconvert feature but I don?t think there is.

I read on the home theater forum website a while back that the *Wizard of Oz* and *Gone with the Wind* might be out in ?09 on blu-ray for their 70th anniversaries. I?m on pins and needles waiting to see a 3-strip Technicolor movie in high definition. I bet they will be beyond gorgeous. Can you imagine *FWTBT* in high-def?!? I don?t think we?d make it through that one ;).

HD tv works in a couple different ways. You have things that are actually broadcast in HD like sporting events and then things that have been converted to HD. This second one applies to things like the TBS high-def channel. The programming is the same (reruns of Seinfeld (one of my faves), Everybody Loves Raymond (another fave), etc?.) except now you can see it in HD on the TBSHD channel. Both of these look great. I?ve also noticed that some movies on TCM look better now too even though it?s not an HD channel. With an HD tv, you use HDMI cables to hook up to your various components (cable/satellite, dvd, etc?) and these are far superior to any other type of cables in the way they deliver the signals. This is probably why even non-HD channels look a little sharper (at least to me) now too. Now TCM does not look high-def, but with some movies I notice a better contrast between black and white, and colors look better too.

That?s cool about the portable dvd player. You never know when you?re gonna need a Gary fix ;).

Thanks, Angie. How can I work when today's the day THREE Gary Cooper movies come out on dvd. :D

The dvd recorder I got a few months ago says it "upconverts to HDMi", so I guess that means if I get an HD TV it will play HD dvds????

All I know is that I do need to think about it because lately my cable reception has been crappy (on all channels) and I also could really use the extra space that would open up once I replace the bulky tube TV with a flat panel. I'm running out of places to store my dvds.

Of course, if I could get started dubbing all those bulky vhs tapes to dvd-r, which is why I bought the dvd recorder in the first place, I would have lots more space! ;)

That will be my project after my vacation. What joy.

The little dvd player I ordered is supposed to deliver a really sharp picture so Gary will look good. I just have to decide now which movies to bring. :P

You can only play high-def dvd?s on a high-def player, so if yours isn?t HD or Blu-Ray then you can?t watch high-def dvd?s. Just a reminder, blu-ray has taken over in the format war so if you?re gonna get a high-def dvd player, get a blu-ray.

Normally for us Coop fans, this would be a sad day (47 years ago today since he passed away) but instead we have three new dvd releases which is a happy thing indeed :). Of course none of them have gotten into my hot little hands yet, but hopefully they will get here soon.

Thanks for the clarification, Angie. So why do they make such a big deal about it's being an "upconverting" dvd player? I'll never understand technology. :P

I haven't received my dvds either, but like Dan said, deepdiscount takes its sweet time.

It can be confusing. Upconverting just means it'll make your standard dvd's look more like high-def instead of just standard def. Like I mentioned before, it's pretty much a crap shoot of which ones are gonna look better. Some look the same, some look better, and some actually look worse.

OK, I see. So far everything's looked fine, and it's been wonderful to finally be able to watch those dvd-r's that you sent me, Ange. :) I'll just stick to this recorder and I also have a separate player for Region 2 dvds.

I'm so impatiently awaiting *Garden of Evil* I can't stand it! I still have a hope it will arrive in today's afternoon mail, though I doubt it.

As Frank so thoughtfully pointed out in another thread, I?m at 2,000 posts!! I have a long way to go to catch up to April though :).

My thoughts exactly ? ha! I?ve been so disappointed everyday when I check the mail and I get is junk and bills. I did get a package yesterday but it was just some new album liners and sleeves I had ordered. So instead of enjoying a restored widescreen version of *GofE*, I put all my LP?s in their new sleeves. My life is just one raucous evening after the other :P.
