MissGoddess
When it rains it pours---I seemingly got every dvd I ever ordered in the past month (or longer) today. FINALLY the Gary movies came and they all seem to be in good shape. The MGM titles were loose in the cases but seem to have suffered no scratches and the Fox box set is perfect. I can't wait to get home and plug them in to make sure. I will probably watch *Garden of Evil* start-to-finish, first, and then with the commentary. I hope they look even half as good on my regular TV as you two have been saying, Angie and Dan. At any rate, I already am very happy.
MissGoddess
After reading all the rhapsodic comments here about how glorious these dvds look on your HD televisions, I was a little disappointed at the image quality on my own boob-tube TV. I never would have cared before, I honestly never used to be so picky about picture quality but now y'all have me thinking seriously about getting an upgrade on my TV soon. I can see noticable, I'll call it "texture," now in everything---from broadcast cable to dvds not to mention vhs. I don't think I ever noticed it before. "sigh". However I still gaped to see *Garden of Evil* at last as it should be.

MissGoddess
It's interesting to note that Bernard Hermann's memorable motif for "Carlotta" in VERTIGO turns up here in Garden of Evil, four years before the Hitchcock film. I wonder if this is the first time he used that particular, Spanish-flavored refrain for a score?
coopsgirl
I sent John Muhlholland an email a couple days ago just to let him know that I was going to the Gary stuff at the Met and he emailed me back yesterday and said he would arrange for me and my parents who are also going, to meet Maria after the lecture. I?ve never had a panic attack, but I got pretty close to it when I read that!! Seriously I couldn?t breathe for a couple minutes and my heart was just racing. I went to go tell my mom and I couldn?t get the words to come out and she didn?t know what was wrong with me and she made me sit down b/c she said I looked like I was about to faint. It was probably about 10 minutes before I could tell her what was going on and even then I barely was able to explain it. I just kept getting tickled and flustered. Needless to say, we are all extremely excited!! John said he might be there (he?s usually in his house on Long Island during the summer) and if he was there he would introduce us but if not he?ll arrange it with Meir Ribalow (he?s moderating the lecture and also does the Icons show with John) for him to introduce us instead. I just can?t believe it! I am a hick from the prairie and I?m gonna get to meet Gary Cooper?s daughter?!?! If I can get any words to come out (ha!) I?ll tell her all about our group and how we?re are all huge fans of his. I?m gonna take my copy of her book to and get her to autograph it. My goodness, I just can?t wait!!!! FrankGrimes
Wow! That's phenomenal news, Ang! I'm absolutely thrilled for you. John deserves much gratitude for making such a wonderful gesture. I'm very impressed but not surprised. He seems like a very kind man.
coopsgirl
About an hour after I read his email my hands had finally stopped shaking enough to type and I was able to reply and I thanked him over and over and told him how much I appreciated it. He is very nice and that seems to a be a trait that all Gary fans have in common. Well all but one . Nice people usually respond to PM?s too . FrankGrimes
He is very nice and that seems to a be a trait that all Gary fans have in common. Well all but one . You shouldn't be so tough on yourself, Coopsy's Clarita. Nice people usually respond to PM?s too . My hands are still shaking. I better find a lot of Coop flowers and candy. And don't think I didn't catch you calling my sweet little lamby a "mannequin."
coopsgirl
*And don't think I didn't catch you calling my sweet little lamby a "mannequin."* So you caught that huh? Well, maybe I was a little harsh. A mannequin would actually probaby do about as good as Grace, not better .
MissGoddess
Ernest Borgnine's autobiography is finally complete. Needless to say, as soon as I can I'm going to flip through this book to the parts about Gary: http://www.tcm.com/movienews/index/?cid=200630&rss=new
coopsgirl
I?ve had a couple more cool Gary dreams over the past two nights. They both involved watching his movies on tv except being that it?s a dream it was weird b/c for most of the dreams it was more like the movie was just happening and not on tv and then it would cut to me actually watching it on tv. Anyway in the first one I was watching a movie that was similar to *Blowing Wild* and Barbara Stanwyck was in it but it was a little different and it was in color. Then the movie went off and it?s like I was watching it on TCM and Gary was sitting there in the studio with Robert and they were talking about it. It was so cool!! Gary was wearing a dark burgundy button up shirt and a nice pair of jeans (Theresa dreams about him in overalls, I dream about him in tight Wranglers ) and he was wearing glasses but they looked real nice on him. They were the kind that don?t have frames around the lenses and he was probably around mid-40s. I don?t remember anything they were talking about but it must have been funny b/c at one point they both got real tickled and it was so cute :x. Then last night I dreamed again that I was watching a movie and in this one he looked about 33 or 34 (no moustache though like he had when he was around 34). I remember having the feeling that it was *Peter Ibbetson* but none of the other people were the same (they were just made up people) but it did look like it was supposed to be set around that time. This one was also in color but the best part was he wasn?t wearing a shirt through the whole thing . But instead of high-waisted pants like they wore then, he had on a pair that hung just below his belly button and he was also wearing a pair of knee high black leather boots. I remember just being absolutely glued to the screen and practically drooling all over myself . I woke up around 2:30 this morning right after I dreamed that one and I?m always pretty disoriented right after I wake up, especially if it?s at a weird time like that and this morning was no different. I was laughing at myself b/c that was such a funny thing to dream about and then I realized the tv was on. I always leave my tv on NBC when I turn it off at night so when I wake up I can get the traffic and weather and they must show Jerry Springer at that time b/c it was on. I didn?t go to sleep with it on and I was really confused. After a few minutes it finally hit me that it wasn?t time to get up yet so I turned the tv off and went back to sleep. Maybe when I was still dreaming I turned my tv on to see if that movie was really playing. Who knows? I do some weird stuff sometimes when I?m sleeping. coopsgirl
My mom found this and emailed it to me. It's a pic of Maria, her husband Byron, and Patricia Neal taken during Byron's 80th birthday party this past March. It sure seems strange to see those two women in a pic together. It wouldn't let me post the pic so here's the link. http://www.broadwayworld.com/galleryphoto.cfm?photoid=57462&personid=16854
