MissGoddess
Buon Giorno! If my typing is bad it's because I am so jetlagged I can't see straight! Angie thank you for your description of your visit to NY and with Maria, I'm so happy for you!! And thanks for sharing the pix! Maria looks ageless, she always looks the same for the last 30 years, what great genes she has. I hope my pre-order of High Noon is at my P.O. Box but I am not sure since I got no confirmation I especially hope it's there because my cable apparently died while I was away so all i can watch is dvds until the repairman comes Sunday! I hope I'm not missing any great movies. In Italy I found this cute little book on Western movis and the reason I bought it that on the back cover and inside is a great photo from THE HANGING TREE and I'm going to scan it as soon as I get a chance and post it here. coopsgirl
Welcome home April! I hope you had as good a trip as I did. I've also bought books just b/c there was a pic of Gary in it . I think Kim and Theresa have done the same thing too. I can't wait to see the pic :x.
MissGoddess
Thanks, Angie and I missed being here. I hope I can do a good scan of the picture, the book is a little tight in the binding so I'm not sure if it will come out well but I will give it a try---the picture is one I've never seen (it's in color) and exceptionally sharp and I think it's great that this underrated western was mentioned. Lol, thank you Chris that's sweet of you. It's nice to be back, but I can't imagine things being so that I could possibly be considered normalizing, ha ha!! Now where is the little Texas Tea Super Model? I hope she's not still having troubles logging on.
Senta
I've heard about the support that Doris Davenport had, but I didn't remember about other actress. And the photo was so nice that I bought it from e-bay.
MissGoddess
Isn't that the actress, Margaret Tallichet, who married the director, William Wyler?
MissGoddess
My Cable is back on, thank heavens, I was going into TCM withdrawl. However, I did watch several dvd recordings, one of which was the Robert Riskin penned and produced gem that is NEVER shown anywhere anymore, MAGIC TOWN. I thought of you, Angie, because I know how you admire Riskin. Have you seen it? Though directed by William Wellman, it has all the flavour---and several of the cast members---of the best of the Capra/Riskin productions. Jimmy even falls in love with a girl named "Mary" (this time it's Jane Wyman). His character is remnicent of George Baily in many ways, too. In fact, it's easy to see how he would fit so well into the Anthony Mann westerns later on when you examine his characters in It's A Wonderful Life and Magic Town, but especially in the latter film. Magic Town shows him going through the exact same character arc his roles in the Mann westerns do, but this movie is so hard to find that many people haven't seen it to compare. I also want to mention that the couple in Meet John Doe---Regis Toomey and that blonde actress---show up again in MAGIC TOWN as a married couple and I even think they have the same names! CoopfanDan
Hi April, I'm glad you had a wonderful time in Paris. I've decided to jump on the blu-ray bandwagon and already have an extensive western list of movies. I figure that westerns are what really shine on HD widescreen TVs so I've just bought the following that even include two John Wayne movies: Unforgiven The Searchers Rio Bravo The Wild Bunch 3:10 to Yuma New version Broken Trail The Professionals Two non-westerns: The Omega Man Blade Runner 5 disc Blu-ray (couldn't really pass this one up as it was under 20 dollars for 5 blu-ray discs) pre-order list: How The West Was Won Pale Rider Lonsome Dove A note though for any recent converts to Blu-ray like myself. There is a term going around called "grain rape" which seems to refer to all the Fox Blu-ray releases like Patton, The Longest Day ect where they use a process that takes out every single bit of film grain that a movie had. To check out what this looks like, please visit the below discussion thread and the screen capture of John Wayne in The Longest Day. He really does look kind of twisted and deformed if you ask me. I hope when Fox gets around to releasing Gary Cooper movies they will go back to keeping the film grain in the movie. The close up of John Wayne's face looks kind of wax like without any film grain in my view: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/ht-software-high-definition/272717-few-words-about-longest-day-blu-ray-3.html
MissGoddess
Hi Dan! I've been reading more and more about the "grain" debate in a few sources. I'm not sure yet what I think yet, beyond my general desire that any dvd release be as close to the original intent of the director/producer's as possible. I bet High Noon will be coming to Blu-Ray, I just bet. And all those Clint Eastwood/Leone movies. This desire to "pretty up" movies kind of mirrors the obsession with plastic-looking perfection we see everywhere else in the media. People aren't supposed to have pores or lines or anything I guess! I like Gary Cooper's well lined face, as well as all the actors, especially the men, of those days so I would hate to lose any of that. I don't want to see them all looking like a baby-face Brad Pitt. Blah.
CoopfanDan
I don't think I will be effected by the loss of grain too much as I really have very few fox titles on my wish list or in fact even own very many fox titles on dvd. Three very big classics from WB in 2009 will be Gone with the Wind, Ben Hur and North by Northwest according to the calander on digital bits: http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/barriemaxwell/hdm042908b.html I will be buying all three of those in Blu-ray. WB does not seem to be taking all the grain out of their classic movies and hopefully they will not start that practice up. Of course fox's original Planet of the Apes will be a no buy for me for 2008 but can't think of any other titles currently slated for release that I will be buying from Fox. Sony is also keeping every bit of grain in their classic releases, which is evident from The Professionals. I can see them releasing They Came to Cordura in Blu-ray as it was transferred to High Definition before being released on dvd. Sony has been doing this with all of their movies since around the time that They Came to Cordura was released on dvd. Even all of their Three Stooges shorts released so far are also now on HD master sources.

CoopsGal
Thanks Angie... I hope you feel better, sis. I know how those yucky summer colds can go. I gave up trying to look for that darn USB input so I'll restart on it soon. In the meantime I'll update the unfinished ones so you have something to do while you're laying in bed recovering. By the way, some guy just emailed me about an annual Silver Spurs Award Banquet; I've never heard of it so I thought I'd ask you if you've heard of it. It's somewhere in Austin... Here's what he said, I am Danny "Rmblin Jack" O'Connell and I am on The Reel Cowboys Board of Directors. I have found your Tribute to "Cowboy Coop" on Youtube and I was bowled over! It is tremendous. I am interested in finding out if you (and Suzy Boguss) would allow us to show it at our Gala annual event, "The Silver Spurs Award Banquet" in October, 2008, in Studio City California at the World famous Sportsman's Lodge on Ventura Blvd. MANY WESTERN CELEBRITIES WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE AND WE WILL BE HONORING SEVERAL AS WELL WITH OUR COVETED sILVER sPUR aWARD. iF YOU HAVE EVER HEARD OF THE "gOLDEN bOOT aWARD" OUR EVENT IS VERY SIMILAR! aNYWAY i WOULD BE CONTACTING (I just noticed I accidentally hit the Cap key, sorry) I would be happy to contact Miss Boguss for her permission. By the way, Lacy J. Dalton will be performing in person this year at our event.. Note: We can't pay anything for the use but I would give you credit at the end with a large byline to you. All of our proceeds are donated to worthy charities, this year to the "Let 'em Run Foundation" of which Lacy is their spokesperson http://letemrun.com:80/ Honestly, I think your videos are MUCH more worthy of such recognition so I sent him some of your videos; I hope you don't mind. I know you wanted to "get them out there" a few months back so this is your opportunity! CoopfanDan
I just listened to ICONS radio show William Wyler and must agree with them that with the body of work of all time bonafide classic movies he was the greatest director that ever lived. I don't think I have ever watched a bad or even an average movie directed by William Wyler: http://www.iconsradio.com/wylerarchive.html One of the topics discussed is the superiority of the movie The Westerner to Stage Coach. Of course the Gary Cooper slant is on with this interview as always
