It's funny. I love Gary, and I love David Niven (he has a pencil-thin mustache, so I go for him). But they are about as different as they can be.... I will now have to rent The Real Glory. Ahh, to be Andrea Leeds.....

I was unfamiliar with *Andrea Leeds* before this movie---I'd heard of her and seen her but this was my first close look and I found her appealing in that Frances Dee/Mary Brian sort of way. Sweet, fresh and unaffected you might say. Such actresses are good choices for pieces like this because there isn't that Movie Star glamour trailing after them which can bother some people (not me, though :P I like seeing Marlene Dietrich wearing Travis Banton haute couture when she runs into a smashing looking John Wayne in some dirty East-of-Nowhere port)

*Can you imagine if a guy was just walking down the street looking like that? Women would be falling down manholes, driving off the road......*

That makes me think of the lyrics to an Andrews Sisters song called 'Jack, Jack, Jack'. It goes:

When he strolls down the avenue, ladies all stop to get a view.

They stand for hours without complaint, to kiss his hand and then they faint!

I'd forgotten she was in Stage Door. She may have lacked humor, without which something seems lacking---unless you're the kind of star that plays it tough and tragic. I also can't really say she's "beautiful" or unique looking, just middle of the road pretty. But very likable. Competition was unbelievably thick back then.

I trust you're talking about Tyrone Power.

P.S. Poor Ralph Bellamy...he always paled in comparison next to any of his male co- stars. Yikes! But he was attractive and had a great speaking voice.

i agree with you dahlink!

i never thought she was striking or even really beautiful. she's in between pretty and plain. though she isnt a bad actress and i liked her in Stage Door. i thought she was pretty good! i cant even begin to talk about the competition for the most beautiful woman in the world back then. a lot of people said heddy lamarr had that title, but i dont think she was striking. she may have been beautiful, but she just didnt cut that title for me too much. i guess it all depends upon your own unique opinion. everyone has their take in who they think is beautiful.

Bon soir, dahlink! Yes, it's all VERY subjective, though I think my tastes are the

absolute best. :D:D:D

To show you how subjective it can be, I've always thought *Ingrid Bergman* was just "pretty" or

even "lovely" but I have never found her to be beautiful. Not in a glamorous movie star way.

She has lots of other things I like: an air, a lady-like elegance, a wonderful laugh and radiant

smile, plus she's an incredible actress. But I can't help but wonder what *Casablanca* would

have been like with Hedy Lamarr instead---whom I do find to be truly beautiful.

I also tend to prefer brunette looks over the fairer kind, which has a lot to do with who are my

favorites, beauty-wise.

That should be the theme for this thread, n'est-ce pas?

He does look really nice in that sweater and I love the part at the movie in the beginning where he's wearing it.

I think Ingrid Bergman was beautiful so if you did look like her that wouldn't be too bad ;). I would love to look like Jean Arthur. She had those high cheekbones and really pretty hair and she aged so well.

Oh, this is not going to go well. Not well at all.

I don't consider Ingrid to be a "classical" beauty, which is probably why I like her

so much. Classical beauties almost always seem cold to me. Ingrid is very warm

to me. She has big puppy dog eyes and a very inviting smile that welcomes you in,

especially men. And with Ingrid's warmth comes a wonderful air of freshness.

Everything around her seemingly springs to life. Ingrid is also exquisitely soft

and smooth. I always want to caress her skin and gently kiss her lips.

There are actresses more beautiful than Ingrid Bergman, but none with her beauty.

I also tend to prefer brunette looks over the fairer kind, which has a lot to do with

who are my favorites, beauty-wise.

I'm the opposite with that, which comes as no surprise.

Hi there Frank: "...There are actresses more beautiful than Ingrid Bergman, but none with her beauty."

I think Hedy Lamarr is the most beautiful woman in the history of movies.

The informal poll (the most beautiful actress/the most handsome actor) done on the Board shows the result that Ingrid Bergman was voted the most beautiful.

Who am I to argue especially with your description of Ingrid Bergman being sooo vivid and sooo dead-on, that I can almost feel Bergman's presence. Nicely put Frank. I feel faint.

Sorry about the double posting. I don't know why that happened.

But let me ask this: Bogey sends her away in "Casablanca." Gary Cooper sends her away in "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Cary Grant doesn't readily profess his love and keep her out of harm's way in "Notorious." Wasssup with these guys? I don't get it.

Hola, CineMaven -- I think Hedy Lamarr is the most beautiful woman

Uh-huh. And I know you know who I believe that to be.

Thanks, darlin'. I know you are a big fan of Ingrid. Liverwurst!

Sorry about the double posting. I don't know why that happened.

Since the Coop thread features so many pages, it usually takes a little longer for

your post to take. What you probably did was hit "post message" more than

once, thinking your post didn't take. The result of this is multiple postings. Even

if the page "times out," the odds are your post did take the first time.

But let me ask this: Bogey sends her away in "Casablanca." Gary Cooper sends

her away in "For Whom the Bell Tolls."

We guys don't always get the girl in the end, that's wassup.

Cary Grant doesn't readily profess his love and keep her out of harm's way in

"Notorious."

Now, now. "Devlin" is madly in love with her. He just has the wrong impression

of her, just as she does of he. Devlin figures things out in the end. Some of us

guys just ain't that bright, you know.

Thank you so much for posting that article. That was the best one about him I?ve ever read. Several times it made me break into tears. I?m glad it?s early at work and nobody else was here yet to see my crying at my desk.

If you look at pics of Gary and Rocky together, she looks the happiest in the 50s. In the 30s and 40s she looks uneasy in a lot of the pics and was hardly ever smiling. She?s always smiling in pics from the 50s and it does seem that after they got back together, they were the happiest.

I'm glad you like it. It impressed me too very much. In december I've bought a big Gary's scrapbook (it came to me as a Cristmas present) and seller also send me a big number of clippings, articles and so on. Some of them I've seen before and wanted to have.

This one was very touching. I feel that some memories and articles about Gary is worth to be reprinted in some kind of book - so everyone can read it.

Hi Everyone!

I posted this article in its entirety in my "Rambles" thread, but wanted to share the link (below) here as well because it touches on several Gary Cooper movies. It's about the lack of genuine "heroes" in movies today:
