movieman1957
Encore Westerns showed "Springfield Rifle" last night. Didn't catch it until it was already underway. I didn't see it for the next couple of days but you might look for it.
coopsgirl
Sony has control over the Columbia/Tristar library and I don?t think Gary has any films under those companies that haven?t been released yet. I?ve been keeping up with them too b/c they are really stepping up with their classic movie dvd releases. Next year they are going to release a box set of the films Frank Capra did with Barbara Stanwyck (*Meet John Doe* with probably not be included though even though it?s in the public domain) they are also going to release some more of Jean Arthur?s films as well as the Hammer films like you mentioned. Mike Schlesinger is the guy who is in charge of all that you can email him and just say you?re happy with the releases or suggest other movies to be released. I have a whole list of Jean Arthur films I?m going to send him and from what others have said, he responds to email and takes them to heart. Here?s a link to a post about him and Sony?s releases at the Home Theater Forum. http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/sd-dvd-film-documentary/273851-sonys-mike-schlesinger-talks-boetticher-scott-toho-hammer-peter-lorre-more.html Sony is also working out a deal with HP to produce dvd?s on demand. It?s not final but what I?ve got so far is if you want a movie on dvd you ?order? it and they will press an individual dvd for you instead of mass producing them for sale in brick and mortar stores. I think this is a wonderful idea and I hope it?s successful and that other studios (like Paramount and Universal) would hop on this bandwagon too. It?s a great idea for things like silent and classic films who just don?t have as big an audience as for new releases.
MissGoddess
Thanks, Chris! I'm glad to hear they are airing it because lately what they've had on the schedule has been more modern westerns. Very disappointing; I've only tuned in for the tv series.
MissGoddess
I think the HP "on demand" dvd idea is one of the most intriguing developments in a long time. Boy, I can already think of about 300 movies I'd want!!
coopsgirl
*Friendly Persuasion* This shot was taken in 1948 after Gary was arrested for grand larceny. The specific crime - stealing hearts all across the world . Seriously though it was listed as a test shot. It just looks like a mug shot to me and I couldn't stop laughing when I found it!! *Vera Cruz*

CoopfanDan
After I bought my new HD plasma 42 inch TV I hooked up my very old Replay TV for recording off of TCM and got pretty bad picture, so I messed with the connections and ended up breaking the coaxial out on the back of the unit so I've been without any ability to record old shows off of tcm. A couple of days ago I was looking through the schedule on TCM and saw they will be airing some Ronald Colman movies that they never show like: Program Title: Raffles A distinguished British gentleman hides his true identity as a notorious jewel thief. CAST: Ronald Colman, Kay Francis, Bramwell Fletcher. DIR: George Fitzmaurice. Romance. BW 72 mins. PLAYING ON TCM: 09/04/2008 08:00:00 PM and Program Title: Cynara Infidelity threatens a lawyer's marriage when his fling decides to steal him from his wife. CAST: Ronald Colman, Kay Francis, Phyllis Barry. DIR: King Vidor. Romance. BW 75 mins. PLAYING ON TCM: 09/11/2008 09:30:00 PM So now in addition to the Playstation 3 for playing blu-ray movies that I just bought a couple of weeks ago, I did some research and just ordered the philips 160GB DVD recorder for in store pick up at Walmart: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10059151 I'm hoping it works out for me and the recorded picture quality is as good as the online community states that it is as I can not possibly go much longer missing out on recording great older movies off of tcm that will probably never make it out on dvd. The replayTV unit I had never really was that good for picture quality and I had to go through all kinds of extra work transferring the movies over to my computer to record on to dvd-r. I'll let you all know how it works out but from the research I did on this unit looks like it is the best of it's kind. I didn't want a recorder that you could only record on to dvd-r and had no hard drive which seems to be what most recorders are these days. I wanted a dvr/dvdrecorder which is what this unit is. If it turns out that the recorded picture is a great deal better than what I was recording movies with then I may have to record all the tcm movies over again with this new recorder that I already recorded. The only downside I can see to this is that the recorder will not be ready for pick-up for 7-10 days and the Clark Gable movie They Met at Bombay is showing this Tuesday
coopsgirl
Here are some pics from *FWTBT*. This first one shows the woman who was originally cast as Maria. I think they only worked with her for a couple weeks and then weren't happy with her so they cast Ingrid Bergman instead. I can't remember her name (and I'm too lazy to go through my book and look it up ) but I think she was a Russian ballerina that they were trying out as an actress. *Gary and Ingrid - now that looks right* Hey Dan, I hope your new recorder works out. I can record the Clark Gable movie for you if you want. It's no trouble.
MissGoddess
Dan, let me know how that dvd-r/dvd recorder works out. When I was shopping around I was puzzled as to why the dvd recorders didn't also have a hard drive. What you got sounds like the best. I've seen *Cynara* and it's excellent. Angie, wasn't that Vera Zorina they wanted in FWTBT?

CoopfanDan
Angie, Thanks for the offer They Met at Bombay is one of Gable's better movies. I recoreded it once before but my cable company lost signal of it for about 10 min during the picture and I never transferred it to DVD as 10 min is a long time to be missing from a movie. They don't seem to show this one very often so if it would be no trouble for you to record it for me, I would love to get this one and see it complete. I'm not sure what kind of dvd recorder you have but does it have a hard drive? The quality for your recordings was certainly better than what my very old replayTV recorrded at. April, yes the 160 GB hard drive and the user reviews for recording very good picture quality was what led to to the philps dvd recorder. It can record at six different quality levels 1 hour, 2 hours, 2.5 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours and 6 hours. Below are some very interesting titles coming up on TCM that make full use of my new DVD recorder. Senta
What a pity that we hadn't TCm here. I have of course Gary Cooper titels from that list and two others - That Forsyte Woman and Another Dawn. But others I have never seen.
MissGoddess
Oh I like that you have all those options for recording length/quality---mine only does 2 hour, 4 hour and 8 hour, plus one called "Flex Recording". Thank you for posting those listings, I see several I'm going to record, including **** Tonk and *Homecoming* which I would have missed but for your post. I'm looking forward to Spencer Tracy day in August, there are several titles I don't have and I recommend MOST HIGHLY A Man's Castle which was directed by Frank Borzage, who also directed Coop's A Farewell to Arms as you know. It's one of my favorite Errol Flynn movies, very underrated in my opinion. It's a beautiful love story---Dan, I think you'd enjoy it. *That Forsythe Woman* contains one of Errol's best performances, and extremely "against type" from what we are used to. coopsgirl
I found this article at the New York Times archive site and it just cracked me up. It's so funny and clever and I think says a lot about how our movie "heroes" have denegrated into bad guys over the years. *Cooped Up* By: Russell Baker October 20, 1974 I go to the movies. Gary Cooper is in the next seat as usual, wearing his badge and Stetson. I am sick and tired of him. He grins and offers popcorn. ?What are we going to see tonight?? he asks. ??The Sting,?? I say, ?and this time stay out of it, Coop.? ?Shucks,? says Cooper. ?You know me.? I know Gary Cooper all right. The previous week he embarrassed me at ?Chinatown.? The unprincipled cop was just about to let John Huston get away with murder, on account of Huston?s being a millionaire, when Coop threw his popcorn box on the floor, strode down the aisle and drew his six-shooter on Huston and the cop. ?Get off the screen,? the audience yelled, but Gary Cooper paid them no heed. ?I?m takin? you both down to the U.S. Marshal?s office,? he said. ?You can?t do this,? Jack Nicholson objected. ?The whole point of this picture is that good guys never win.? ?You better get on your buckboard and get out of town fast, son,? Cooper told him, ?before I take you in for interfering with an arrest.? It was a long speech for Cooper, so without another word he marched Huston and the cop off the screen and the movie ended with Nicholson heading for Laramie. ?I hear this is a real good one,? Cooper says of ?The Sting.? ?Just stay out of it, Coop,? I say. After a while he begins stirring unhappily. ?These fellows are nothing but a bunch of crooks,? he whispers. ?They happen to be Robert Redford and Paul Newman,? I say. ?Even if they are crooks, they?re charming and lovable, and the audience loves them, so stay out of it.? It is too late. He is already striding down the aisle and up on the screen with the drop on the whole roomful of swindlers before even Newman can get away with the loot. ?Get those hands up,? he says. ?We?re all going to take a little walk down the marshal?s office.? The audience boos as Cooper rides them all off into the sunset manacled about cayuses. I am fearful that someone will know Cooper was with me and beat me up for being an accessory to the triumph of law. My analyst is no comfort. ?You are merely hallucinating Cooper as an agent for fulfilling childish desire for heroes who are honest,? he says. He suggests staying away from movies in which criminality and corruption prevail until I become less infantile. So I go to ?Deep Throat.? Cooper is there. After 10 minutes he says, ?Whew.? ?Stay out of it, Coop,? I plead. Futilely, of course. ?Miss Lovelace,? says Cooper, towering over her on the screen, ?you need a little church training.? He throws her over his shoulder, covers her with his badge and says, ?I?m taking you down to the schoolmarm so she can introduce you to the Ladies Aid Society.? The audience pelts the screen with comic books and dark glasses. My analyst loves this report. He asks me to commit myself for study at the Institute of Incredible Sexual Repressions in Zurich. I run. To the movies, of course. But this time to ?The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz,? which I know in advance is merely about an ambitious young man. Cooper is there. He even likes the movie. ?This is okay,? he grins as Duddy goes into the business of making home movies of bar mitzvahs. But what is this? Duddy is behaving rudely to grownups. Yes, very rudely. He is laughing at them and ordering them off his land. Cooper is the aisle before I can stop him. ?Stay out of it, Coop.? It is useless. Up on the screen Cooper has Duddy under his right gun arm and he is saying, ?Young fellow, I?m taking you over to old Judge Hardy?s booklined den for a man-to-man talk about good manners.? End of picture. Quickly, I run to see ?Going Places,? figuring Cooper will be tied up giving Judge Hardy some quick-draw tips, but he arrives in time to see the movie?s two utterly charming heroes engage charmingly in burglary, kidnapping, car theft and casual thuggery. ?Those fellows are nothing but a pair of skunks,? he says, striding down the aisle. ?Stay out of it, Coop!? The audience is enraged to see him rescue a lovely mother from ravishment, but Cooper takes the charmers to the marshal?s office anyhow. My analyst says Gary Cooper is dead and I am too immature to accept reality. Cooper looks at the analyst without expression. ?I could take him down to the marshal?s office for taking money for useless explanations,? says Cooper. ?Stay out of it, Coop.? I plead. coopsgirl
Feel free to post it anywhere . It's so funny that he's trying to do the right thing but that's not what audiences wanted to see anymore. It has only gotten worse since then unfortunately. I nearly lost it when I read the part about him going to see *Deep Throat* !! I gotta tell y?all about the funny dream I had last night. Me and Gary were on a double date with William Powell and Myrna Loy!! It was strange b/c it seemed pretty normal. I don?t think any of us were married, we were just dating. The guys had on tux?s and me and Myrna had these really pretty 30?s looking evening gowns that were also black and white so we all matched ? ha! I remember us going to a fancy restaurant and having a good time talking and laughing and then when we left it was raining and we ran out to William Powell?s SUV. Then I woke up. I have such an amazing social life - when I'm asleep !

Senta
Hi Miss G. You are April, are you? I have Another Dawn on VHS too bought it at e-bay a while ago. I'm not a technical woman so I have no idea how to put my vhs titles on dvd, like to do it but not able. I like this movie too. The Forsite Woman I also have on VHS but it was released here on DVD. Errol plays against type but in the whole I think all very close to the types of Golsworthy (not sure is it right spelling or not) novel, even if it takes only one story line from it. I think that is due to Errol's humanity peeking through the character, making him a shade deeper than an cardboard character. I have The Forsythe Saga but never having been able to finish reading it, I have put it to use as a "support column" for one of my book shelves. Senta
I've read the novel, but a long time ago. Enjoyed it, and always wanted to reread it, but didn't find time yet. The best place for reading Victorian novels is while staying in the country with nothing to do. But I always start rereading Dickens on such occasions and they became rare omne in latest years. But hope never dies.

MissGoddess
I love Victorian novels but for some reason Galsworthy and Dickens never held my attention. Speaking of Dickens, his *Tale of Two Cities* always does grab me, it's probably my favorite of his stories and I think the Ronald Colman film version which aired this morning on TCM is superlative. Senta
It is really hard to name my favorite Dickens novel. I think Bleak House and OUr Mutual Friend. As for the movies. I haven't seen much of them really. There was good TV BBC versions I saw in my youth on our Tv, recently saw Great Expectations - b,ack and white english film. But to say truth the books I love dearly I don't relly want to see on screen. I even don't want to watch such films when they came out with very little exeptions. Because if you like the book you see many differences and changes even in plot and charecters. I haven't seen Colman movie.
MissGoddess
I know what you mean, Vera, it's aggravating when a favorite book gets all changed around for the movie version. One of the things I liked about David O. Selznick was that when he produced a movie adaptation of a beloved novel, he insisted the writers and director stick as close as possible to the source because otherwise they would risk the displeasure of the novel's fans (the Ronald Coman movie I mention is a Selznick picture, and is fairly faithful to the novel). I cannot even IMAGINE producers today giving a hang or a fig, they make such egregious changes to immortal classics (that beastly *Romeo and Juliet* that came out in the 90s, for example).
