It won't bore you! Seriously, it's considered a "classic" for good reason. Tight

direction, beautiful black and white photography and extremely taut performances

by all concerned.

It is even worth noting that Gary Cooper may be the only actor to win an Oscar

for a leading role...in a _western_.

Check out the auctions linked in the thread below...on July 31st & August 1st a famous

memorabilia store in L.A. will be selling off many of it's gems (on Ebay), including literally

hundreds and hundreds of Gary Cooper stills (pricey, though):

I've already registered for the one for the 100 pics from *The Texan*. I'm still deciding though how much I want to spend or if I'm going to bid at all but I figured I would go ahead and register and I'm just waiting to be approved.

I wanted to took part in this auction, but I'm leaving for 10 days right on 1.08. And in case I win I'll not be able arrange payments and shippings. Besides it is all new to me and after all costly. Even if the price of each photo will not be so high. So I'm out.

But I'm glad that you Angie will participate and I'm really hope that you win.

Kimling---though I don't celebrate the B-days, you must know I wish you the best every day. :)

Ladies! Was last night some sort of Coop "anniversary"? Because it was his night to shine

on not just one, but TWO stations. I hardly knew where to turn. I just happened to flip around

during Mr Deeds, something I normally wouldn't do, and New York's local station was airing

A Farewell to Arms! But that's not all---I stayed long enough after the credits rolled to catch

a discussion panel with Patrick Hemingway (Hem's son), John Mulholland and Maria!! It was

a 30 minute discussion about how Coop and "Papa" met and their friendship, and of course

a few reminiscneses. I can say that nothing really "new" was brought up, new to us that

is, ha! But it was lovely to see Maria---this is my first good look at her and my goodness

she looks like she's in her forties! But even lovelier is her pesonality. She seems to me

to physically favor her mother but didn't you think, Angie, that she has the sweetness of

her father? I particularly noticed that the way she looks at people reminded me of him.

She seems like an extremely gracious lady and very feminine. I wish she could have

done all the talking! :D

Anyway, the Coop/Hemingway documentary was still spoken of as "upcoming" so let's

hope that's sooner rather than later. Any more word on that, Angie, Dan?

P.S. I think *A Farewell to Arms* is too important a film to languish as it has. The state of

the prints I've seen are disgraceful---it's the first Hemingway adaptation, Gary's first full

fledged performance of emotional depth and artistry as well as a landmark early "talkie".

If a rumored Borzage box set is forthcoming, I hope this movie is chosen if it is restored.

When I saw in the schedule that TCM was featuring Gary in the primetime lineup yesterday I wracked my brain trying to think if July 27th was significant for some reason. I don?t think it is though. That?s cool that they were also spotlighting him on your local channel. I think the thing you saw with the panel discussion was from a couple years ago when they screened the doc for a preview audience at one of the universities in New York. The last I heard from John about the doc was about a month ago and he said they were nearly done with the distribution deal but weren?t quite there yet. It sounds like it has been pretty complicated but hopefully we?ll get some good news soon.

It is a shame that there isn?t a good version of *A Farewell to Arms* on dvd. I bought two versions of it and neither one was watchable. One was so dark you couldn?t tell what was going on during the night scenes (which is the majority of the film). The other version had a better print but you couldn?t hear it very well even turned up really loud. Finally, I just recorded it off TCM b/c it was a complete print and had decent audio and video. I want it on a real dvd though dang it!!

When I was showing everybody my pics of Maria from the trip, they couldn?t believe she was nearly 71 years old. She does look a lot like her mom but she got some of her dad?s height and like you said, his sweet personality (which isn?t to say Rocky wasn?t sweet too, we just don?t know as much about her :) ). She was so nice and gracious to everyone. When people were talking to her, she was really paying attention and like her dad, there's not a phony bone in her body. I still can?t really believe that I got to meet her and actually chat with her a little bit about Gary. I won?t ever forget it :).

I hope I don't fall asleep at my desk today. I normally go to bed around 9:30 b/c I get up a little after 5, but I had to stay up and watch all of *The Westerner* which went off a little before 11. It just doesn't seem right not to watch his movies when they're on tv ;).

He just looks like the ideal cowboy in *The Westerner*. I was watching that one just a few days ago (and then yes I stayed up and watched it again last night ? ha!) and I was holding a plate of food in my lap sitting on my couch. It came to the part near the beginning where he?s rolling a cigarette and then he slowly pulls it across his tongue; I kinda shook all over and almost tumped my plate over. Now, I don?t know how many times I?ve watched that, but it gives me pretty much the same reaction every time :P.

He?s just so cool in that one without trying to be cool. He may not have wanted to make it, but I?m sure glad he did :x.

I love Loreena McKennitt and finally got around to putting all the cd?s of hers that I have on my mp3 player this weekend (it?s new and I?ve been waiting to get the bugs worked out and finally it?s fixed). I was listening to it this morning and her version of the poem *The Highwayman* came on. I?ve loved that one since I first read it in 8th grade, and even though the guy in it is a thief, it made me think of Gary ? ha! I can definitely picture him in the outfit the guy wears, especially the thigh high boots and tight pants :x. It?s pretty long so I?ll just post a link to the poem here.

Loreena McKennitt is awesome and I know you would love her!!! She?s a modern singer from Canada, but it seems more like someone went back in time and plucked her out of Celtic England :). None of her songs sound modern pop and she has a very ethereal voice, which is just perfect for the type of music she sings. The music is always beautiful and rich with many old types of instruments; she plays most of the music herself and writes her own songs (except for the ones that are poems of course). She has also done song versions of Yeats? *The Two Trees*, Tennyson?s *The Lady of Shalott* and some snippets from Shakespeare. She does the whole poems too so some of those songs are as much as 10 minutes long, but they?re so good that they go by too fast. I know at least one of her songs *The Bonny Swans* had a video and you may be able to find it on youtube and get a sense of what her music is like. I saw the video for that one on PBS when I was in college and have been hooked ever since.

I found a page on her website where you can listen to snippets of her songs. Here?s the link to the page with the album that *The Highwayman* is on.

We were all just on the edge of our seats reading that one in school, waiting to find out what happened. I also love *The Two Trees*. Yeats and John Donne are probably my favorites poets, they wrote so many beautiful things. And of course Shakespeare's sonnets are just amazing :x.

You are very lucky to have TCM. I wish it came here.

On russian DVD Farewell to Arms are not so bad, but may be better of course. It is shame that this movie with Meet John Doy are not restored.

I wanted to post this photo here from Legion of Condemned. haven't seen it before.

It is interesting but Gary is the only man to whom makeup is very becoming.

Like on this early portrait with makeup too.

By the way have Maria any children?
