coopsgirl
I would definitely love to have his early talkies (?29-?31) as the next batch of dvd releases since those are the ones we have that are the worst quality. I found this form on Universal?s website where you can send in comments about their home videos so you may want to try this one. http://www.universalstudios.com/contact_form.php?email_id=10 When I woke up this morning, I sure wanted to go back to sleep b/c I had a whole night of wonderful dreams. In the first one, Gary and I were going antique-ing and to my great delight he looked like Will Kane again in the one :x. Once we got to the antique store it had a big parking garage and it seemed like were driving around forever in it until we found a place to park. Once we finally got the car parked, we just sat there for a while kissing :x and then went in and started browsing around. He had his arm around me the whole time and he was so much taller than me, it was great!! I remember thinking too how nice it was being with him b/c I loved him and he loved me ? awwww . Then in the second one, I was at home watching TV and I was scrolling through the schedule guide and I saw that on a channel I didn?t even know we had they were about to show *Children of Divorce* so I was running around like a crazy person to get it set up to record it. I don?t remember actually seeing it though, dang it! Then in the third one, I dreamed the nasty guy at work decided to take a job in another department and we were all so happy but we tried to be nice and act like we were gonna miss him. I?m especially sad that this one was only a dream b/c he?s been real bad this week. One day, he got to coughing so bad I really thought he might pass out. I mean sometimes it sounds like he?s on his last legs. I feel a little bad for him b/c clearly he?s got some medical problems but he also drinks (I?ve smelled it on him myself) which can?t help, and he just has such an irritating personality and I know he has very poor hygiene practices so I just keep my distance. He probably thinks I?m a biznatch b/c I never even make eye contact with him, but hey, I don?t want to catch anything he may have.
Jennythenipper
The Cloak and Dagger pictures look awesome. I agree Coops Girl, we need those pre-code pictures. It's not fair that they aren't available. I think it's funny that you actually dreamed you were going to get to watch a rare movie you hadn't seen. coopsgirl
I know the majority of my 2000+ posts are about Gary so when you put several of us together flapping our gums about him, I guess it adds up pretty quick . It doesn?t seem like it was that long ago that we passed the 5,000 mark ? ha! The external hard drive that I use with my laptop bit the dust yesterday but thankfully not before I was able to burn stuff off of it. I?m gonna have to buy a new one today and I think I?ll upgrade from the 500GB one since I keep so many movies on it. They take up about 4GB?s a movie and I like to keep all my Gary movies and most of my Clara Bow movies on there so I have backups and can use them for slideshows. I?ll have to put all of them back on the new hard drive and I?m not looking forward to that as it will take several days if not a couple weeks. MissGoddess
Amazingly, I have not yet loaded up my PC with stuff. I am waiting to get all my vhs movies copied to dvd before I tackle the "burning" dvd-r's or more complicated things. That's when I'm sure I'll start to eat up my memory. But if anything ever happens to *Photobucket* I'm really going to be upset! I just used up all the memory in my original, free account (Coop takes up the most space) so I've started a new one. It's annoying having to jump back and forth between the two.
coopsgirl
It will definitely be a pain in the **** to put all my stuff back on a new hard drive but at least I didn?t lose anything. I had a Seagate drive and it only lasted a little over a year so I?m gonna go with a different brand this time around. I know what you mean about Photobucket, nearly all my pics are of Gary with some of Clara and some of the Astros.
coopsgirl
I?ve gotten a couple interesting comments lately on some of my Gary slideshows that I thought I would share. One was for the video I did to Jo Stafford?s song *Make Love to Me* which has a bunch of kissy and romantic scenes. Someone left a comment that said Gary was very handsome and could be quite sexy. I just thought this was funny b/c people seem to be surprised sometimes that he could be sexy. I know we have talked about this before that so many critics who look back on his career now, lament the fact that after *Mr. Deeds*, he played so many ?good guy? roles that seemed to have no sex appeal. When you look like he did however, you don?t have to try and overtly act sexy or play a sexy role to still have some major sex appeal working . The other comment however, bordered on being disturbing. It was for the one I did using clips from *The Fountainhead* to Duffy?s song *Mercy*. The comment started off pretty normal saying how the film fit the song then they began describing why people liked Ayn Rand?s books and said it was b/c of the sadomasochistic nature of the characters and b/c women have rape fantasies and like to be spanked. I?ve heard that in the book version, Howard Roark does rape Dominique after the bedroom scene but since I haven?t read it I don?t know exactly what happens. I have never understood that whole ?rape fantasy? thing, to me that?s just sick. Now, I wouldn?t mind at all if Gary snuck into my bedroom one night and tried to put the moves on me like in the movie, but that?s b/c I?m already attracted to him. If it was just some stranger off the street, that would be terrifying.
MissGoddess
Hi Angie! Wow, that latter comment says more about the person who wrote it, I think, than about anything else. I haven't read _The Fountainhead_ in ages but he may be right about that scene. However, as I remember it Dominique already had "invited" him over and into her bedroom, just as the film depicted, and taunted him sexually. That's perverse enough to me without going into the stuff that person seemed to get out of it. And you are quite sure the person didn't sign their name "FrankGrimes"? coopsgirl
Somehow I had a feeling this would attract Frank?s attention. Looks like I was right . Every now and then I get a whole bunch of weird comments all in a bunch and from different people. I may have to close the comments on one of my videos (tribute to Craig Biggio?s 3,000th hit) b/c over the past few days people have been leaving comments that praise Biggio but that are full of profanity. I have deleted them but they keep posting more and it?s different usernames so even when I block them, more pop up. I got a negative comment the other day (probably from Frank ) for my *Ball of Fire* tribute video. They said they liked the original film better and this was not a tribute to the film but a tribute to bad taste. I nearly laughed out loud b/c it?s not like I destroyed the original and my video is all that?s left . Lighten up people!
JackFavell
It amazes me what people let come out of their mouths. You would think that they would be really embarrassed to WRITE stuff like that.
Jennythenipper
I think you should just ignore or delete all the annoying or weird comments. Your videos are great. Ayn Rand seems to stir up strong feelings either for or against. Personally I find the Fountainhead film hilarious. It's jam packed with people who say and do things no one would do or say in real life. Anyone who thinks that you could generalize the fantasies of women from watching that movie is as cracked as the deliberately broken marble in Dominiques fire place. Still love the Fountainhead though. Insert drill joke here.

Jennythenipper
OT: I'm really enjoying Garbo day. Anyone else? I was tempted to call in sick to work. Now I have a tivo logjam that's quite daunting. But oh well, too many pre-code Garbo movies, not enough time is a very good problem to have.
coopsgirl
Well, I only delete the comments that are very vulgar (with profanity or ads for teeanage girl webcams, etc...) b/c I don't want people to think they can't leave an honest opinion whether it's positive or negative. I'm glad that most people like them though b/c I love making them and I always try to make them good. Here's the latest one I made for one of my fave silents *Seventh Heaven*. Charles Farrell is such a cutie and he and Janet Gaynor made an adorable couple. *Personally I find the Fountainhead film hilarious. It's jam packed with people who say and do things no one would do or say in real life.* That one is my least favorite of Gary's and I've only been able to sit through it once and my main beef with it is how unrealistic the characters are and how bad the dialogue is. I mean, come on, Gary admits to blowing up the building so basically he committed an act of domestic terrorism and got away with it!!! Personally, I was rooting for him to go to jail and you know it's bad if I'm doing that . *Insert drill joke here.* I gotta say, that drill scene in the quarry and the scene where he comes into her bedroom at night are most definitely the best things about that film. OOOOH sweaty chest hair!!!! Somebody get me an ice pack, I need to cool off :x.
MissGoddess
I'll have to watch your video at home, Angie, for some reason YouTube chooses to tell me "sorry, this video no longer available" and I know that's not true. It's something to do with my office PC. If I knew how to make those I would do one of my favorite movie kisses...and I'd include several from Gary's movies of course, such as The Fountainhead, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Along Came Jones and maybe Saratoga Trunk. I'm not sure what song I would use.

You blew up a whole building because you didn't like the railings on the balconies? The worst part is that supposedly the story is based on Frank Lloyd Wright. He never blew up any buildings that I can remember. I can tolerate the movie once every couple years. I think Gary looks fantastic and King Vidor's direction is amazing. The movie takes itself so seriously, it's hard not to just laugh at it and enjoy the eye candy.
coopsgirl
*The Fountainhead* is certainly great eye candy especially since I prefer older Gary and he is hotter than a depot stove in this one. I got tickled when I was watching it (it took me three tries to get all the way through it) b/c he thinks his buildings are so great and to me they look like they got beat with an ugly stick, real hard. I like balconies myself so I think it?s especially silly when he comes unhinged at the idea of putting them on his building. Is anybody else curious how he managed to get into Pat?s bedroom? We don?t really see it, but I just get the feeling that she?s not on the ground floor so I have this image in my head of Gary shimmee-ing up a drainpipe or something to get in there. Hormones are powerful things and I guess he wasn?t gonna let a little thing like being on an upper floor stop him .

Jennythenipper
Yeah, they should have just cribbed FLW for the drawings. It's not like there weren't a million knock-off Wright wannabes out there. Speaking of drawings. Gary started out as an illustrator. Does anyone know of any samples of his work. It would be interesting to see.
coopsgirl
There are some pics he drew in Maria?s book about him (Gary Cooper Off Camera: A Daughter Remembers). I?ll try and scan some of the pics when I get home this afternoon. I also noticed in *Cowboy and the Lady* near the beginning when Gary is sitting in his tent with Walter Brennan and the other guy (can?t remember his name) and he?s writing a letter and on the back of the pad you can see a drawing of a cowboy and I bet he drew it (at least, in my mind he did ). MissGoddess
While I'm no big fan of Ayn Rand, I do admit that I like that quality about Howard Roark, that he refuses to see his vision compromised, just as an artist wouldn't want someone taking his painting or sculpture and tampering with it. Roark is more of an artist or visionary than the kind of architect who works with a team. He's independent and his ideas are what drives him, not the ideas of anyone else and that's a very idealistic way to be, it also can get you poor really fast in any profession. I do believe in compromise in terms of getting along with people, but not to the extent of altering your values and ideals. The lengths Roark goes to in order to protect the integrity of his work are, of course, melodramatic. I would like to have seen him fought for it in another, more practical way. A way that people everywhere could perhaps look at and see how they might apply it in their own life. The way it is in the book and movie, it just distances people because it's so over-the-top. I'm not sure how else he could have made his point, but I guess it would have been more boring to depict conflict in a less violent way. The building destruction is not my favorite part of the movie either. But I do admire the character's uncompromising vision because it is so rare. It reminds me of Michaelangelo and his infamous fights with the Pope to paint the Sistine Chapel his way, not the Pope's way. He even destroyed his own, painstaking work because he was not satisfied and started over. Everyone thought he was insane. I suppose all true artists are a little crocked, though, that's why I love them.
coopsgirl
Here are some pics of him sketching that I remembered I had. I don?t know if he really drew these or if they were just brought in for the pics but they?re still nice anyway . Now in the last one you can?t see what?s he drawing, but does it really matter?
Jennythenipper
Every artist has to compromise for patronage in some way. It depends on how they deal with it and how far they are willing go to please the patron. Michaelangelo was certainly constrained in terms of his subject matter. He managed to work within it to make his own statement, but he still couldn't paint whatever he wanted on the Sisetine chapel. Any architect has to be aware that people are going to have to live with their buildings. In the case of Frank Lloyd Wright that wasn't always easy. He was notoriously demanding and controlling, down to design the furniture and insisting on its placement. The quality of his constructions were problematic. Most of his greatest buildings leaked. (Maybe that's why his studio, Taliesin West is in the desert?) He was a genius no doubt but I have real sympathy for his clients who put up with all his demands. In the case of Howard Roark, in the film his buildings are even that great to my eye (Although the interior of the apartment building is pretty cool) so that makes his inflexibility hateful.
